About Me

Rachel’s work is departure from the realistic world and into the inner world of emotion and magic. Her art follows stylistically the traditions of early European modernism with the marked influence of Caribbean color and design.Rachel was born in Snow Hill in eastern North Carolina and earned an undergraduate degree at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She married, had two sons and a daughter and lived in the Dominican Republic for 10 years before coming home to return to college. At East Carolina University she earned a graduate degree in art, taught school at Fort Bragg for 21 years before taking early retirement to paint full time in 1994.Rachel has worked professionally in both theater stage design, and as a muralist, doing a total of 12 sets, for Bordeaux, Dinner Theater, Charlotte Blume Dance Theater and Circa Theater, and producing murals both in Fayetteville and Miami.She was part of a two-man exhibit at the Arts Council of Fayetteville Cumberland County in 1988, and later the same year had a solo show at the Dominican American Institue in The Dominican Republic. She has been included in numerous other shows , had a show of her own entitled the Watchful Eye” at Cape Fear Studios in August of 1988. She took part in the Splendid Things exhibit at the Fayetteville C.C. Arts Council in 1997, and at the Emerging Artist exhibit in 1996.Rachel was awarded an Emerging Artist grant in the 95-96 art season to produce a series of screens in view of her prestige as both a scenic designer and muralist.She is an active member of Cape Fear Studios.
