About Me

I've been playing music since I saw that the guys in my Junior High class that were in a band had the attention of all the hot chicks. By the time I realized that it took more than a guitar to get that reaction, I was having too much fun to give it up. I switched to bass when I realized that there were always plenty of guitar players and never enough bass players. Since I wanted to work, I got a bass. I spent the seventies playing in a variety of bands up and down the Central Coast of California, sometimes working with three or four groups at a time, as well as doing numerous recording sessions as a sideman. Some of the most memorable bands were Thunderstrut, Country Pie, and Wild Eyed Notion. I also worked with two very fine songwriters, Richard Green and Paul Hobbs, as a trio called The Dads. Great songs!
At one time I was playing with a Led Zep/Bowie/ZZ Top rock band, a bluegrass band and a local Big Band all at the same time. It was fun showing up to the hard rock gigs in a three piece suit, the bluegrass gig in platform shoes and tight pants, and the Big Band gigs in overalls.
In 1980 I was fortunate enough to team up with a rocker named Al Millan, when each of us had a song selected for a local compilation album (SLO-Grown '79) and we did a benefit concert together. Forming a band called Al Millan & the Robots, we released two albums on a small California label and gigged constantly. Life and careers put an end to the band's full-time existence by the late '80's, but we never completely called it quits. Al is still writing and the band still records and performs whenever we can.
Over the years some of the groups I've been privileged to work with have shared stages with artists as varied as Thin Lizzy, David Grisman, Foreigner, Leo Kottke, David Lindley, and Los Lobos. I even had an opportunity to perform with Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. I'm amazed at the variety of different musical styles I've gotten the chance to play. But some of the most satisfying experiences have come from accompanying singer/songwriters, and there are many such talented people around the Central Coast, like Craig Nuttycombe and Bo Dugger.
The songs here are some of my favorite recordings from all periods of my career, each one accompanied by a photo of me from about the same time.
I'm now performing and recording with my partner in life and music, Sharon. Come visit Garon at www.myspace.com/garyandsharon. I've been performing with a wonderful country rock band called Rancho Deluxe http://www.myspace.com/ranchodeluxe. I'm also working with my old friend Richard Green again, which is a great thrill http://www.myspace.com/richardgreen805 and also Impromptu http://www.myspace.com/theimpromptuband. br>
