Band Members: My own project for which I arrange and compose is the Mulligan Stew sextet which features Jim Bailey (alto sax) Nick Hislam (tenor + soprano saxes) myself (baritone sax) Neil Hunter (piano) Jenny Ford (bass) and Andrew Sime (drums)Also I play in more informal quartets or trios with the aforementioned and other likeminded Leicester jazzers such as Pete Harratt, Mike Sole, Maurice Moore, Andy Kirkland, Paula Robinson, Dave Marriott...
Influences: At one time or another I've admired pretty much everybody from Bechet to Brecker. However these days these days I most want to emulate people like Pres, Benny Carter, Lars Gullin and Joe Henderson - elegant, economical players who do stuff with sound and space rather than technical muscle. I'm only just beginning to appreciate how deep Ben Webster could be. The problem I'm grappling with is how to get something of that simplicity of expression without sounding dated.
