Myspace BackgroundsI started DJing about about 23 years ago when I first heard house music mixes on WBMX (in Chicago, IL). When I was listening to these mixes I told myself that I could do that--blend different beats together. My first turntables were Technics, but not 1200's (I had no idea what those were). I then went to my local Radio Shack and got a mixer. I also had like three cassette decks (if you get a chance watch the movie Beat Street and check my mans setup). My setup was complete, but there was one thing missing---records. My mom was a big music fanatic and had records all over the house, so I got into her collection. She had a lot of 70's soul. It was kind of hard to mix, but this was only the beginning. I really liked hip-hop so I went to my local record Disc Jockey and started buying records every week. I practiced like everyday until I felt confident enough to make my first tape. It was like performing in front of an audience. I was so nervous. I kept thinking what if I lose pitch and the mix is all f--ked up?!? Everything worked out though. The mix was cool and that was the beginning. Now in the future--I haven't been DJing much. I started doing music production about 12 years ago and I've been working on that. Well, that skill is perfected and I am getting back in the mix. Like every other DJ, I've had many different names (DJ S.P.I.N.--stupid perpetual innovator of noise, DJ Ruckus, and now DJ Guzl). This is a new day and a new beginning for an old soul. The Liquid Textures mix series is basically songs that would normally not be mixed together. My mixes will have old school artists, new artists, independent artists, and unknown artists. This is my way of keeping hip-hop alive and to keep the music playing.
