About Me

MyGen Profile Generator It is with great sadness that we have to announce the closure of Certificate 18 on Gillygate.
On Sunday Dec 30th 2007 the doors were permanently shut on this versatile and exciting music venue.
With this will obviously come the usual post-mortems and theories but the basic reasons behind the closure were financial.
Contradictory to the article in the Evening Press the resident staff were not given a week's notice prior to the closing nor had any of the staff walked out for any reasons. As stated above; the reasons were financial.
Over the past 5 years Cert 18 had grown into an excellent live music venue catering for a wide range of tastes with bands and DJ nights covering most genres although the basic ethos of the place remained grounded in Rock Music.
The venue's reputation was growing and had started to attract larger acts over the past two years such as Diamond Head, Neville Staple and UK Subs to name a few and had more lined-up for 2008.
York has an incredibly vibrant music scene and we were very much a part of that. Our main aim was to promote and showcase the music talent that York obviously has. A constantly improving PA, soundproofing and (as was scheduled) the introduction of a great light show could have seen Cert 18 grow even more.
At the time of writing this, the future for the building is still unclear. I hope the new owners will carry on the groundwork we had set and continue to keep the building as a Venue and will help to keep York music alive and kicking.
If anyone had a show booked with us in 2008, I'm sure you can find a new home by contacting our Promoters in our 'top friends'.
