JOSE PEREZ
Virginia native Jose Perez is a laid back, urban contemporary neo-soul vocalist and songwriter with gospel roots whose influences have ranged from Stevie Wonder, Hall and Oates, Boyz II Men, Jodeci, Phil Collins, Bob Marley, Anthony Hamilton, Michael Mcdonald, Luther Vandross, Jagged Edge, and Randy Travis to name a few. Perez developed a diverse sound by mimicking television show themes and commercial jingles. His primary objective as an artist is to appeal to a diverse audience by offering a fresh alternative to mainstream soul.
Perez born and raised in the small town of Altavista, VA he was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hood. His inspiration cultivated early, as he listened to the His older brother play the drums everyday in the house. Perez sang and performed in his hometown church of 2nd St Paul Baptist since he could hold a mic. While Mrs. Monroe, Mrs. Austin-Clark, and Mr. Mason keep the youth of the community together, the common interest of music would bring the kids together about two or three times a week. Perez was a member of the Sunbeam Choir in which he and the members would travel around to local churches and churches abroad to share their gift of music. Being rooted in the church, he attended every Sunday to listen to his mother teach Sunday school while his father a church deacon and grounds keeper for the church. It wasn’t long before Perez decided to link up with some childhood friends and form a local group with a young man by the name of Dr. Love. Other members included E, Mike, D Nap, J-Rob, Boo, and Los. Each individual possessed talent far beyond their years. They began performing at local amphitheatres, parks and opening shows for mainstream and underground artist such as Naughty by Nature, Cypress Hill, and House of Pain. The most influential people in Perez’s life are the people in the small town and surrounding cities where he grew up.
After Graduating from Bluefield College where he often would sing solo’s in convocation he started a life overseas playing professional basketball in Chester, England. Playing a season as point guard for the Chester Jets Perez suffered an ankle injury after which he returned to states side an currently resides in Charlotte NC.
After rededicating himself to God he also rekindled his passion for music in pursuit of making positive-influential music for all ages and genres. Perez’s first project “God its Been A While†was produced by Thelonius, at CHP Audio. This project led to working with a local composer and pianist Charlotte Vaughn. They met in the studio, and instantly connected. After working overnight in the studio, they had produced a new hit track “In the Rain†.Currently Perez is working on projects with Obia Studios owned and operated by The Incredible Dj Polo with special thanks to Eddie Lee and Arab. Perez is working along side muli-talented engineers and producers from the infamous DiamondStiClick, and Rude Bowy, and Rocki also of Obia Studios. It is Jose’s mission to unify the world with music, one ear at a time.
