Influences: My first recollection of Gospel and Blues Music was hearing my Grandmother play the organ and sing along with Mahalia Jackson Records. Some were 78 rpm's! There was always Jazz and Blues being sung and played around me from birth. My Mother, Janice Medlin, was a jazz vocalist at the age of 9 touring with a local Big Band in the Texas/Oklahoma Panhandle. My father loved Jazz, but made his living traveling in bands all over, playing
Western Swing and Country, or as they said in those days, Western Swing and Country!
The two were not linked as they are today. He eventually made his living apart from us in Nashville, TN as one of the "SUPER PICKERS" of the Nashville studio scene. He played bass on over 400 number "1" country records. My father, Bobby Dyson, was the father from afar, whom I knew through the Hit Songs he played on, such as:Jolene-Dolly Parton,
Poke Salad Annie- Tony Joe White,
When your Hot your Hot- Jerry Reed,
I'm not Lisa- Jesse Coulter,
King of the Road- Roger Miller ( He sang backup with Roger). The list is long and I could go on and on, he played on all of Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton records, Mickey Gilley, and of course countless custom sessions. He passed in 1996 but his bass lives on in his legacy. My Mother Janice Medlin was a child prodigy by singing jazz in a big band that traveled the Southwest at the tender age of "9"!! She had a soft, wooing fabulous voice and still does when we can get her to sing!
I was mostly influenced by my Mothers taste in music. For instance, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn, Peggy Lee, Anita O'Day , Etta James, Oscar Peterson, George Shearling, Bessie Smith, and of course Billie Holiday. Like I said, if the environment is there, children will absorb it into their very being. At age 10, I knew what I wanted to do for a living, Be a Star! I wanted to travel the world with my music and give back to those I loved, and had taken me and my sisters in. I had grandiose dreams of buying nice homes and cars for my Grandparents Bob and Lorean Ware. I still want to make a difference in this world with my music. I spent most of my teens closed up in my room listening to Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Chaka Khan, Beatles, SteppinWolf, Grand Funk, Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, Elton John, Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, and eventually the two greatest bands in my mind, Earth Wind and Fire and Tower of Power!!! In my 20's, I traveled with a band from Baton Rouge , LA. That changed my outlook on music. They turned me on to Little Feat, Ray Charles, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Palmer , Alan Tousaint, and of course the Neville Brothers and a local favorite, the Meters. I have loved the feel and groove of the true Southern Blues and Rock.I am truly BLESSED by God Almighty to have the gift of voice, and now I must give back by helping others. This is why I dream, ponder, and "ache for the chance" to record my songs.
MySpace Music is a wonderful forum for all musicians to connect and give back to the world. I wish Blessings on all of you reading this and pray that your dreams come into fruition one day.

Sounds Like: ME!!!!! Although all my life I have heard, "You sound just like Aretha Franklin!" Hold up now! There is only room for one Queen of Soul, and she is it! I am honored to be included in the likes of her, and even Janis Joplin, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, Anita O'day are mentioned in these quotes. I just find that mix that is entwined in my very being and know when it comes out in song, It is truly me.You are now marked on my visitor map!
