TCM views this as pathogenic ‘qi’ (energy) invading the body and stimulating a defensive reaction. Normally this takes place in the superficial layers of the body, where the ‘wei qi’ (defensive energy) circulates, and normally we are able to cope with this balance of energies. However, if the pathogenic ‘qi’ is too strong, or the body’s ability to deal with the challenge of external climate change is inadequate, then the body’s normal function will be damaged to some extent, and symptoms will appear. These symptoms may resolve quickly (e.g. in a common cold) - or possibly lodge deeper in the body, if the pathogenic ‘qi’ is not expelled. The pathogenic qi of wind, cold, and/or damp is particularly prone to lodging in he jointsOther more chronic conditions such as depression can be affected by longer evenings – and Chinese herbs and acupuncture can be helpful here. Even conditions such as chronic fatigue, (which in TCM may often have internal stagnation of qi and/or dampness) may respond well to treatment. As for treatment – both herbs, and acupuncture can greatly help. In TCM cold is seen as consuming the yang (good) ‘qi’ energy, slowing, contracting and stagnating the circulation of qi and blood. Cold symptoms are usually fixed in location, better for warmth and worse for cold. Dampness also slows the qi and blood circulation and makes function sluggish and congested.Chinese herbs may soften mood swings. It is effective in helping some patients control symptoms such as irritability, poor self-control, racing thoughts, and sleep problems. Our TCM doctor specialises in diagnosing and treating arthritis, joint pains and depression using herbal remedies and acupuncture having studied for many years under one of the highest professors in China in the field of depression and stress. If you would like more information call us on 01273 606224. or drop by for a chat our health clinic at 7 Trafalgar Street (this is at the bottom of Trafalgar street down from Brighton main line station)
