...It takes about three-and-a-half minutes of local (mostly instrumental) quartet Wax Fingers to win you over. The song that will do it is entitled "Flood," and the first couple minutes seem to meander in that take-it-or-leave-it middle ground that so much post-rock seems to inhabit. But then the crescendo of swirling guitars kicks in and the band shows glimpses of that late '90s-era Temporary Residence sound, where bands could transform, build, and bend songs with carefree ease... .
...Modesty aside, Wax Fingers confidently kick-started a fine evening and they did it in the company of many. The Portland trio (the laptop, parked front and center, makes four) favors the spacey and ethereal, often constructing a melodic theme only to juggle it forcefully for several minutes before wrestling it to the ground....
...committed to its quest of shaking loose paint off walls through lush, experimental jams that corkscrew up and down like a carnival ride. It’s effectual prog-rock with a dash of black magic and whale song. ....
