Bruno Capinan’s voice resonates a vibrant legacy of a hybrid culture and a vivid story of an expatriate from his native Brazil. Born in Rio de Janeiro, an epicentre of Brazilian culture, he grew up in a society where music is considered ‘popular’ in the true sense of the term: originating from and destined to the populace.
In his early teens, he began writing his first musical creations influenced by the music of artists such as Caetano Veloso, Bjork, Adriana Calcanhotto, Tom Jobim, Cessaria Evora and Billie Holiday. His songs’ vary greatly in style delivering a mosaic of sounds seductively blended with poetic lyrics and his smooth bossa-nova vocals.
Living in Toronto for the past seven years, his first appearances on Canadian stages came in 2003 while meeting with local musicians. His aim was to introduce to Toronto’s music scene his fusion of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) poetry and indie music.
Projects have since included the composition of the score for French Filmmaker Mateo Guez’s shorts L’Ultima Notte and XY , a performance alongside the choreography of Piotr Biernat at the Toronto International Dance Festival and appearance in the internationally acclaimed documentary Gloriously Free for which he was described as a ‘sensitive, compelling and gifted musician’ by Canada’s Globe & Mail.
Bruno’s vision is to create songs that would reach audiences at a universal level, establishing the bridge between the public and the personal. His intentions have always been to write songs not solely to satisfy listeners but also to entice and enrich their musical experiences.
His debut album, Gozo, recorded in Canada, Australia and Brazil, is a provocative and rhythmic interpretation of the vast amount of music that the singer has explored since his arrival in Canada. Conscious of the power music can possess, Bruno Capinan is ready to bring his own to the world in hopes that it may provoke and inspire the hearts and minds of future audiences.
