Town of Brookhaven and Citizens Campaign for the Environment Announces Massive Concert: Long Island Sounds Off to Stop Global Warming and Broadwater This concert is scheduled to coincide with Vice President Al Gore’s Global Live Earth Concert SeriesFarmingville, NY- The Town of Brookhaven, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Renew Community Earth, and the Anti-Broadwater Coalition announced today a FREE concert that will take place on July 7, 2007 at the Brookhaven Ampitheater from 4:00PM to 11:00PM in celebration of former Vice-President Al Gore’s global Live Earth concert series. This concert festival will present the local perspective to the global event and will raise awareness about the climate crisis. In addition, it will help demonstrate Long Island’s opposition to the Broadwater Energy Project.“The Long Island concert joins with this important global movement and allows us to focus on one of our key objectives which is to protect Long Island Sound”, said Kasey Jacobs, Program Coordinator with Citizens Campaign for the Environment. “What better way to celebrate and defend Long Island than through music,” Jacobs continued.Live Earth is a music event sponsored by Al Gore and the Alliance for Climate Protection that will bring together more than 2 billion people to raise awareness about global warming. With 24 hours of music across 7 continents, and performances by more than 150 of the world's top musicians, Live Earth will engage, connect, and inspire individuals, corporations and governments to take action to solve the climate crisis. The Long Island Sound is in serious danger from climate change and Broadwater. Climate change is already starting to play a negative role in the health and productivity of the Sound and these climate effects will only continue to amplify, such as warmer water, aquatic acidification, a declining fishing industry and lobster industry, and an increase in invasive species. Broadwater, a joint venture between Shell Oil and TransCanada, is poised to invade the Sound and take away a massive portion of Long Island Sound, a public resource, for private profit, and will disrupt the commercial and recreational uses of the estuary while negatively impacting the already threatened Sound ecology.“This concert is just what Long Island needs to further solidify our dedication to protecting the Long Island way of life and the legacy of our maritime culture. Global warming and Broadwater threaten this legacy and we’re taking action on July 7th”, said Adrienne Esposito, CCE Executive Director.“Long Island Sound is a special and sacred as any church, synagogue, or temple. As we would not place an industrial facility in a house of worship we should not site Broadwater industrial barge in the middle of Long Island Sound”, said Peter Maniscalco, President of Renew Community Earth, who’s currently conducting a 35-day spiritual vigil on the beach of Wading River to protest Broadwater. “If Governor Spitzer okays the Broadwater project millions of people from Long Island, New York City, Connecticut, and elsewhere who love the Sound will suffer a spiritual wound from which we will not recover”, Maniscalco added. The July 7th Concert Festival will consist of top Long Island music acts of all varieties, speeches by elected officials and community leaders, and “solutions kiosks” set up around the venue educating attendees on local climate change solutions and ways to help stop Broadwater.
