About Me

By Imaam Ibnul Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (d.751H) Valuable speech from Imaam Ibnul-Qayyim outlining ten ways in which the servant comes closer to Allaah, along with some heart-melting poetry.People have discussed about mahabbah (love of Allaah); its causes and what brings it about, its signs and its fruits and its rulings. The most comprehensive saying about this is what Abu Bakr al-Kattaanee rahimahullaah relates about al-Junayd (d.279H).Ibnul Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (rahimahullaah) said:"People have discussed about mahabbah (love of Allaah); its causes and what brings it about, its signs and its fruits and its rulings. The most comprehensive saying about this is what Abu Bakr al-Kattaanee (rahimahullaah) relates about al-Junayd (d.279H).Abu Bakr al-Kattaanee (d.322H) said:"A discussion about mahabbah took place in Makkah during the Pilgrimage month. The Shaykhs who were present spoke about this matter and al-Junayd was the youngest of them. They said to him: O 'Iraaqee, what do you have to say? So he bowed his head and tears were flowing from his eyes and he said:"A servant should overcome his soul; And be continuous in the remembrance of his Lord;Establishing the Rights of his Lord;Focusing upon Him with his heart; The late of fear setting a blaze upon his heart;Whilst drinking from the vessel of true love; And certain realities become unveiled to him;So when he talks, it is due to Allaah; When he speaks, it is from Allaah; When he moves, it is by the command of Allaah; And when he is serene, then it is from Allaah; He belongs to Allaah, is for Allaah, and is with Allaah."So the shaykhs began to weep and said: How can that be increased upon? May Allaah reward you with good, O crown of the knowledgeable ones!" [1]Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) further said:"The reason which cause the mahabbah (love of Allaah) to develop are ten:Firstly: Reciting the Qur..aan, reflecting upon it and understanding its meanings.Secondly: Drawing closer to Allaah through the performance of optional deeds, after fulfilling the obligatory deeds.Thirdly: Being continuous in the dhikr (remembrance) of Allaah - in all circumstances - with the tongue, the heart and the limbs. The more constant the dhikr, the more mahabbah intensifies.Fourthly: Giving precedence to what Allaah loves - when being overcome with desires - over what one personally loves and desires.Fifthly: Causing the heart to contemplate over the Names and Attributes of Allaah. Being a witness to what they necessitate and causing the heart to be enlightened in the garden of this realisation.Sixthly: Witnessing the blessing and the favours of Allaah; the apparent and the hidden.Seventhly: Subduing the heart and humbling it before Allaah, causing it to be in awe of Him.Eighthly: Being in seclusion during the time in which Allaah descends to the lowest Heaven; reciting the Qur..aan, and finishing this recitation with seeking Allaah's forgiveness and sincerely repenting to Him.Ninthly: Sitting in the gatherings of the sincere and true lovers of Allaah; reaping the benefits of their teachings, and not speaking except when you know there is benefit in doing so and that such speech will increase you in good and benefit others as well.Tenthly: Keeping clear from all those matters which will cause the heart to distance itself from Allaah - the Mighty and Majestic. So these are ten matters which cause the lover to reach the station of true love for Allaah, so that he may then reach Allaah - his Beloved."

ALLAH !!! A reminder concerning the harsh and fearful reality of death. You know Allaah; yet you do not obey Him. You recite the Qur..aan; yet you do not act according to it. You know Shaytaan; yet you continue agreeing with him.Shaykh ’Alee Hasan al-Halabee said:"Death is a harsh and fearful reality, faced by everyone who lives. No one has the power to avoid it, nor does anyone around the dying person have the ability to prevent it. It is something that happens every moment and it is something encountered by the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak. They are all the same in that they have no plan, or any means of escaping it, no means of intercession, no way to prevent it or to delay it." [1]Allaah the Exalted says:"Say: Indeed, the death from which you flee will surely meet you, then you will be sent back to Allaah, the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen. And He will then tell you what you used to do." [Sooratul Jumu’ah 62:8]"Every soul shall taste death. And we shall make a trial of you with evil and with good and to Us will you we returned." [Sooratul Anbiyaa 21:34-35]Indeed it is death: "which causes fear in the souls, and with it, ones actions are sealed, and what comes after it is even more fearful and fear-inducing. For is there a place which no one can flee to in order to escape from the constrictions suffered in the grave? Indeed, not a single one of us knows where he will end up. Will it be Paradise whose width is like the heavens and the earth, or will it be the Fire whose fuel is of men and stones?" [2]Ibraaheem Ibn Adham (d.160H) - rahimahullaah - said, when he was asked about the verse:"Call upon Me, and I will respond to you." [Sooratul Ghaafir 40:60]"They said: We call upon Allaah, but He does not answer us." So he said:"You know Allaah; yet you do not obey Him. You recite the Qur..aan; yet you do not act according to it. You know Shaytaan; yet you continue agreeing with him. You claim to love the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam); yet you abandon his Sunnah (guidance and way). You claim to love Paradise; yet you do not work for it. You claim to fear the Fire; yet you do not stop sinning. You say: 'Indeed death it true'; yet you have not prepared for it. You busy yourself with the faults of others; yet you do not look at your own faults. You eat the sustenance that Allaah provides for you; yet you are not grateful to Him. And you bury your dead; yet you have not heeded its lesson." [3]So this - O noble reader - is the reality which must be firmly established in one's heart; the reality that life in this world is limited and has an appointed end, and that this end will surely come…"The righteous will die;And the wicked will die.The warriors who fight Jihaad will die;And those who sit at home will die. Those who busy themselves with correct beliefs will die;And those who treat people as their slaves will die.The brave who reject injustice will die;And the vile who seek to cling to this vile life will die.The people of lofty-goals and ambitions will die;And the wretched people who live for cheap enjoyment will die." [4]Shaykh 'Alee Hasan al-Halabee said:"So keep in mind the point of death, and of one's passing on to the next life, and the number sins that one has committed and the small amount of good that one has done. Think of the good that you would earnestly like to do at that time - then bring that forward and do it today. And think of all those things which you would desire to clear yourself of - then clear yourself from them now."
