About Me

Revelation is Perth's International Film Festival.
2007 marks its 10th anniversary year.

Located in Perth, Western Australia, Revelation started its life in 1997 as an underground event in the back room of a jazz club. At the time The Greenwich Club was Perth's smoothest music venue; films were screened on 16mm alongside live music, poetry, guest presentations and performances. Its mission was to showcase a range of shorts, features, documentaries, archival and animated programs of a more "exotic" nature - AND of course, to shamelessly celebrate contemporary underground and independent film culture.
Revelation has always retained that independent spirit. It now has a reputation as Australia's leading independent international film festival.
Since 1997, audience figures for the event have increased annually between 30% - 60%. Today the programme includes over 100 international films presented over 75 sessions, a Screen Conference component, and is held at 5 established cinema, cultural and nightclub venues across Perth.
Revelation is Australia's fastest growing annual film event attracting around 10, 500 patrons each year.
Rev has been extended to include music, visual arts, performance, academic and practitioner discussion, both generated by the event and by outside curators. Each year over 500 films are submitted for selection by local and international filmmakers. It prides itself on having a deep connection with its audience, the filmmaking community and global film culture.
Programmed as part of the Australian film festival season, Revelation is one of the major international film festivals on the Australian circuit.
Revelation was - and still is - seriously concerned with the increasingly conservative nature of film distribution and exhibition in Australia. It has always sought to challenge current marketplace practices and biases through progressive screening contexts, focused curation and audience consultation.
The event has also always maintained a playful approach programming. Areas of pop and youth culture have always figured heavily in Revelation alongside some of the most individual and acclaimed works from the local and international scene. Whatever your taste Revelation seeks to unearth vibrant, individual, unusual, passionate and committed films.
Revelation was founded by Richard Sowada, Festival Director.
Richard has gained a reputation as one of Australia's most respected independent film curators and screen event organisers. He is currently chairman of the Rev board and works as Head of Film Programs for the Australian Centre of the Moving Image in Melbourne, Australia.
Revelation's 2007 Guest Artistic Director was Megan Spencer.
Megan is one Australia's most well known film critics (triple j, The Movie Show) and most passionate independent documentary filmmakers (Heathens, Strange Hungers, Lovestruck). Calling on her unique background as both film critic and filmmaker - and 2 decades worth of experience - she continued to make Revelation one of the most dynamically curated, exciting and uncompromising annual screen culture events in Australia.
Revelation maintains its focus on progressive and inspiring works and embraces audiences of all ages, tastes and backgrounds.
Like the films it presents Revelation maintains an energy and enthusiasm for the industry quite unlike any other film festival in the country.
