About Me
Scottish singer/songwriter Michael Reynolds, and New Jersey singer, musician, artist/filmmaker Chip Miller, who comprise the songwriting and vocal core of OLD SAND MILL, are somewhat of a classic band, channeling Neil Young, Donovan, The Beatles, a bit of Yes, and Simon & Garfunkel. Originally called Reynolds and Miller, their acoustic folk rock music and early live concerts made them an act to watch. Music Critics in New York dubbed them, "New Jersey's answer to Crosby, Stills & Nash." The Village Voice wrote, "Their fans were spellbound by their well-crafted songs, intricate harmonies, and story-telling savvy." In less than 3 years, the duo created a base of over 10,000 supportive fans throughout the Metropolitan area. They were named Best New Artist at the prestigious three-day Hamilton Music Festival in upstate New York, and made appearances at all the key venues in Manhattan, opening at the time, for such acts as Jackson Browne, Nina Simone, and Seals & Crofts. After signing a management deal, they entered into a creatively suppressive recording contract with a major NY label, that eventually put stress on their partnership, and eventually derailed the popular duo, as well as broke up their long friendship - a friendship that began when they were both living in England. Following the split, Chip started up a new rock band, Pomeroy. This Pink Floyd-like group played the theater and concert circuit opening for Jefferson Starship, Patti Smith, and The Ramones, and featured class act musicians hand-picked by Chip. David Maynard on lead and electric guitar, Tom Carroll on bass, Howie Fields on drums, John Slack ..boards, Hammond organ, and Mellotron, and Chip on lead vocals and guitar and flute. During the Pomeroy era, Chip also composed dozens of well-known national commercial jingles for the likes of Toyota, Wrangler, Mobil, Borden's, and Polaroid, including his famed, "Milk Is A Natural" tune for the ADA.Then Miller moved to Hollywood where he achieved a successful career as a film director, producer, and screenwriter, as well as a Music Producer of numerous young LA bands. He produced and oversaw several indie films, including: "Mortuary Academy" (with Paul Bartel, Christopher Atkins, Cesar Romero, Perry Lang, Mary Woronov & Wolfman Jack; "Karma Kula"; "Square Dance" (with Wynnona Ryder, Jason Robards & Rob Lowe); etc., and Flashpoint" (with Treat Williams, Rip Torn, and Kris Kristofferson). He has developed and written major screenplays with Penny Marshall, Ron Howard, Lindsay Wagner, Clint Eastwood, Liam Neeson, Sally Kirkland, British actress Susan George, Nicolas Cage, and singer/actress, Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas. As a TV director & producer, he has helmed over 75 MTV, MTV2, BET, CMT, and VH-1 music videos for such artists as: Linkin Park, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Brian Wilson, Charlie Wilson (The Gap Band), Tyrone Wells, Jerry Douglas (Alison Krauss & Union Station), Donovan, The Black Crowes, LL Cool J, Holly Robinson, Celine Dion, Gerald Levert, Faith Evans, MC Lyte, The Flirts, Eddie Murphy, Night Ranger, Tattoo Rodeo, Sir Jinx, Percy Bady, Mitsou, The Curve, Jeffrey Osborne, OMD, Peter Murphy (Bauhauss), The Commodores, Danzig, Lizzy Borden, The Little River Band, and Squeeze. He has directed two indie feature films - "Street Wise" and "Four Day Shoot." In 2009, he is slated to direct the political controversial feature, "Bamboozled!" for Canadian-based Gabriel Foundation. He also has a script in development at Fox Television - a TV biopic, "Loudmouth," about legendary TV talk show host, the late Morton Downey, Jr.As a Music Producer, Chip has overseen and produced original and cover tracks with director Mel Brooks, singers Sally Eaton, Susan George, William Clyde Orange (The Commodores), Jerry Douglas, Karl Preusser, Earl Mankey (Concrete Blonde, Sparks), Rick Boston (The Januaries, Low Pop Suicide), Doug Rasheed, and Radio Werewolf.During this same period, Michael continued playing acoustically on the Greenwich Village club circuit, and became a regular at Paul Colby's Bitter End Café, attracting crowds for every performance. Soon, he formed The Michael Reynolds Band and became a popular mid-west touring act, known for their great live shows. Shortly after he lost his young wife prematurely to Cancer, Michael decided to place his music and performing on the back burner for a long spell, choosing instead, to pursue an acting career in NJ theater troupes. Though he continued writing dozens of songs, and continued composing new music, he kept it all to himself. Until one day, while watching CNN, Michael saw his former partner and friend, Chip, appearing live on The Larry King Show with his partner, Michelle Phillips and her pop star daughter Chynna (Wilson-Phillips), promoting a screenplay he had written about The Mamas and The Papas.Immediately, Michael did some research, and found a way to contact Chip by phone. Upon hearing each other on the phone, they quickly patched up their differences and buried the past. In 2006, they reunited in Hollywood. When they heard each other's new material, they were more than impressed by their still pristine and perfect harmonies. Chip proposed that they write and perform the theme song for a new weekly series he was directing for Disney Television. Their original song, "The Sun Song," was a rousing success. So, after a long absence, Reynolds and Miller were finally reborn again, but as -- Old Sand Mill. And with the help of top musicians who Chip knew through the industry, like multi-Grammy winning Jerry Douglas; Grammy winner and r&b legend, Deniece Williams; Darryl Jones (The Rolling Stones); Howie Wyeth, Gabe Witcher, Rick Boston, David Maynard, Karl Preusser, and Earle Mankey, Old Sand Mill & Friends recorded a CD of new songs, and enhanced some of their past classics. All of them gems. And for those who haven't figured out the name Old Sand Mill yet, it is basically the center letters of their old name as a duo - reynOLDS AND MILLer.
