About Me

When it comes to Soul, R&B, Jazz, and Hip Hop, San Antonio is probably at the end of a long list of cities such as New Orleans, Atlanta, Philadelphia, & New York. All of this is in the process of changing as DevSoul takes over their city one venue at a time. It all begin as an idea in the mind of performing artist Ms. Devon Wilson, the bands' founder and namesake. "My vision was to create a soulful, yet sexy atmosphere within the San Antonio nightlife scene. "I grew tired of wanting to visit Houston, Austin, or Dallas to get that live music vibe. I wanted keep up what groups like Mojoe have started but in my own way. And that's exactly what I did," says Devon. Since DevSoul's first gig in November 2006, they have performed at local hot spots such as Madison Avenue, The Studio, Club Antro, On The Half Shell, The Carver Theatre, & Lackland AFB. At any one of their shows you can catch music lovers 18 to 88 grooving to the sounds of Chaka Khan, Beyonce, Jill Scott, Mary Jane Girls, Frankie Beverly & Maze, & Erykah Badu. Devon, who is blessed with perfect pitch, loves working with no non-sensed musicians that strive for perfection on every level. This Spring welcomes some veteran musicians in the mix as well as some new ones to the DevSoul Family! We also have new & extraordinary background vocalists so expect some beautiful harmonies & new energy in the ambience. Dev, as many of her fans call her, is managed by Bennie Mixon of Weight of the World Management. "Devon is a unique artist. Many do not know that she's a classically trained vocalist, dancer, & actress who studied at Texas State University- San Marcos and is a favorite at local theatres such as San Pedro Playhouse & The Carver. I have no doubts that she will use her talents as a conduit to do great things for San Antonio." DevSoul will celebrate its 2 year mark in November and plans to make its way to Luna, Chango's, and many other popular live venue favorites. Devon and the band are preparing to debut original music this Fall for her faithful fans, friends, and family. "I am blessed beyond measure with these gifts," she says. DevSoul is a love and soul machine that is constantly aspiring for more. DevSoul is thirsty for your emotion, for your hand clap, and your head nod. Beat, funk, soul, hip hop approved. Yes. DevSoul is. You have LEAD VOCALS from Dev like sippin' on WHITE ZIN in the Wintertime, KEYZ hot like butter rolls fresh out the oven, BASS from OMG, sweet BEATS, and BG Vocals that are so correct...Don't Sleep...

Influences:The genre of neo-soul music, though only conceived as a sub-category for the past few years, is fuel for DevSoul. From Aaliyah to India to Erykah to Sade to Dwele to Alicia to Kindred to Floetry to Lauryn to Musiq to Vivian and all the other genuines, we love you. To escape in their music with the candles and incense burning, the a/c on cool, and a glass of strawberry zinfandel in hand as u lay under a nice leopard throw is total euphoria. R&B has been a part of this journey. I remember asking for R&B in elementary school. I got 10 tapes for my B-day and 10 for Christmas. It was in my fisher-price cassette and mic player that I learned pitch, range, memorization, song emotion and delivery. Jill Scott, Mary, Aaliyah, Faith, Kelly Price, Whitney, Mariah, Keke, Missy, Chante Moore, and even some of the newer artsists, such as Keyshia Cole, have inspired DevSoul in their own rite. Old Soul, which is Aretha, Patti, Chaka, Billie, and so many more are the foundations that hold all the above together; including the jams of the 70's, 80's, and early 90's. Hip-Hop music and this generation is the vehicle in which to break barriers and bring about extreme but neccessary change within urban communities in the U.S. and abroad. Soul is just that...
Sounds Like: When grease hits a hot skillet in ya grandmama's kitchen. DevSoul and all of its conglomerates is about pure soul in every sense of the word. Many people are asking me what the word soul on the end really signifies...however you want it, however you need it is how DevSoul is gonna give it you. It could Soul as in the genre of music or Soul symbolic of spirituality. It could be Soul as in the essence of ones' innate being...whatever it is that has the DevSoul stamp on it is gonna be something that touches you and moves you to that level of euphoria you never knew existed. It's music rich like a slice of Juniors Cheesecake...sultry and smolten like a warm summer night walking down Houston St...and melodic like chimes on your grandmama's porch. DevSoul equates to events, performances, and theatre thick with class, style, and sophistication...that part of you that only your reflection get to see...the purpose, the passion, and everything in between.
