Uh, Hi. I'm Niala. *pause* This, I suppose, is where I tell you about myself even though no one will likely be reading this thing. Oh well, not like I'm doing anything else at the moment besides staring off into space and contemplating unlikely plots for various tv shows. Anyway, I'm a 26 year old Reproductive Health Assistant for Planned Parenthood. I'm a loud and proud feminist, activist (ask me what it was like to be among one million people marching for choice in Washington D.C.), and a crusader for social justice. I'm affiliated with/a member of Planned Parenthood, N.O.W., the Feminist Majority, Moveon.org, the Mars Society (I support the human colonization of Mars!), and many others. Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, Classism and any other form of discrimination and hate I absolutely detest and will not tolerate. I'm interested in and am passionate about many things. The world fascinates me to no end, especially culture. Hence, my being a sociology major. I tend to live in my own head (it's a much nicer place there and I have a legion of fans who chant my name) and see the world from the perspective of an outsider looking in. I'm VERY sarcastic and funny (yay for defense mechanisms!), but around new situations and people I'm reserved until I can test the waters. I love my friends and I'm fiercely loyal where they're concerned. I hate Shrub (Dubya) and generally love life. "Take it! It's yours!"

My Interests

Pretty much all things entertainment, celebs, Hollywood, gossip and fashion. Hey, I'm a native Los Angelino(a), what do you expect? I am also interested in politics (I'm a staunch Democrat) and in getting Shrub out of the White House by any means necessary. I absolutely love history, particularly ancient and cultural history. The history channel is awesome. I love documentaries and can watch them all day. I once watched the entire history of Britain on the history channel in one day. One hour for every century (note that Britain is well over a thousand years old). I'm also very interested in scientific development, especially space travel. "We may all be in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars." I love to debate/discuss controversial issues and hot topics. Mental stimulation is a good thing. I'm addticted to candy and chocolate and my dentist is a very happy man because of it. sigh. I'm also addicted to the internet, but I consider it to be my "healthy" addiction. I mean, hey, it could be worse...I could be a crackwhore or junkie. So what if I spend like 40+ hours online every week...it's not like I have a problem! Going outside is completely overrated anyway. The air's polluted, the sun kills, and people suck. That reminds me...I'm also a very active and dedicated member of the fanfiction community. If I was as passionate and knowledgeable about academics as I was about fanfiction, I'd be one smart mofo. Mensa material. Sigh. It's not my fault though, Slash just happens!

I'd like to meet:

I've actually met a lot of the people I would like to meet. It's crazy. I'm so pissed at having missed the chance to meet Andy Mangels at CC! I was sooo close! Grr. I believe that I will probably eventually meet all the people I want to. It helps that most of the ppl I want to meet are actors in cultish things who attend fannish things like conventions. Though sometimes they do die before you get to meet them; that's so inconvenient. Oh well. Cest la vie.

Music:

My main genre is pop/rock. I absolutely love The Killers, 30 Seconds to Mars, Matchbox Twenty, Savage Garden, The Barenaked Ladies, U2, Aerosmith, the Dave Matthews Band, Evanescence, Alanis Morissette, The Calling, Magdeline Hsu-Li, Dido, Jason Mraz, Bree Sharp, Howard Shore (composer), Elton John, Jon Bon Jovi, Michelle Branch, Kane (rock/country), the Goo Goo Dolls and many others. I LOVE soundtracks. Especially sountracks from tv shows. Some of my faves are Buffy, Dawson's Creek, Roswell, Ally McBeal, Smallville and the X-Files. Some great movie ones are The Matrix ones, Spiderman, City of Angels, and Titanic. I am a Disney music freak, so of course I have those soundtracks too. The Pocahontas and Hecules ones rock. And speaking of which...I'm a HUGE fan of musicals and Broadway. I adore Andrew Lloyd Webber. The man is a genius. I mean, hello? Jesus Christ Superstar! My fave musical is Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida. I'd do anything to go back in time and see it on Broadway with the original 2000 cast of Heather Headley, Sherie Rene Scott, and Adam Pascal. Anyway, my music tastes are quite eclectic (I forgot to mention the love of Bollywood music!). "Music is the soundtrack of our lives."

Movies:

Science fiction, drama, some comedy (not usually slapstick), documentaries, musicals, historical epics, martial arts movies, period pieces, coming of age movies and various things here and there. Some of my fave movies are: Brokeback Mountain, The Matrix trilogy, the LOTR trilogy, the Austin Powers trilogy, anything by Michael Moore, the Time Machine ('68), the Shawshank Redemption, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Diry Dancing, Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban, HP: GoF, Love Actually, Strange Days, The X-Files Movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Finding Nemo, Hercules, Pocahontas (ok, most Disney), Shindler's List, The Roots Saga, Titanic, Mr. Holland's Opus, Shoalin Soccer, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Office Space, Serenity...and many others.

Television:

OMG, where to begin?! I am a complete and total tv-whore. Most of the years of my life have been spent in front of the tv. My fave genre is scifi by far. My fave shows of all time are The X-Files, Angel and Star Trek (as a whole though my fave Trek series by far is DS9). Other scifi shows I love/loved are Stargate: Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica (new), Heroes, Lost,Buffy, Roswell, Andromeda, Firefly, Odyssey 5, Dark Angel, John Doe, Alias, the LoneGunmen, Doctor Who and SeaQuest. I also love crime dramas like CSI, the Practice, Cold Case, and law and order. As for comedies, I'm pretty selective. My fave one and one of my fave shows of all time is MASH. I also loved Ally McBeal, Will and Grace and Scrubs. I LOVE historical fiction shows but sadly theyre kinda rare. Xena is another one of my all time faves and Legacy, though short lived and unfairly axed, will always hold a place in my heart. The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne was always very cool. Teen dramas are a weakness of mine, so Dawson's Creek, Felicity, Smallville, Roswell and others deserve mention (note the genre crossovers). I almost universally hate reality tv though I make a notable exception for some makeover shows and the Real World (though it is increasingly bad). One of the shows I hate the most is 7th Heaven. God, that show should just die a horrible death. And it will be! *dances straight to Hell*

Books:

Harry Potter series (Order of the Phoenix is my fave!), anything by Octavia Butler, Snow Crash, Schismatrix, The Light Bearer, The Giver, Shakespeare (especially A Midsummer's Night's Dream and Macbeth), Number Our Days, Antigone, the Orestia, Interview with the Vampire, Black Beauty, The Red Tent, Yo!, The Bone Setter's Daughter, The Grapes of Wrath,Where the Red Fern Grows, Super Fudge, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Memoirs of a Geisha, Ruins, Antibodies and Ground Zero (those three are original X-Files novels), The Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson, The Scarlet Letter; He, She and It, Lord of the Flies, Brave New World, The Call of the Wild, V.C. Andrews (incest and child abuse are fun!), The Children of the Earth Series by Jean Auel, The Phantom Tollbooth, Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, The Hundred Penny Jar, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, Bunnicula, Dr. Sues...oh my God, it'll take me forever to list all my fave books and even then I'll be missing stuff. I'll add more later.

Heroes:

Desmond Tutu, Martin Luther King, Einstein, Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, the Dalai Lama, genuinely kind people, my grandmother, people in "helping" professions (like social workers and nurses) that get no money and no respect, but continue to provide badly needed services because it's the right thing to do. People I know who have had crappy lives and experience but still manage to smile and see joy in the world. Myself because I'm one of those people I mentioned in the previous sentence, and we should all be our own heroes. I'm proud of myself and what I have accomplished and that's okay.

I'm reading. Leave me alone!

When you're quietly reading and obviously absorbed in the book, why do people insist on asking you (with concerned voices, no less) why you are being so quiet/if everything is okay? I mean, hello, rea...

Scary moment # 342

...Wondering if you accidently donated a book of gay male erotica you got for free at last year's Comic Con to the local public library when you dropped off about a hundred magazines the other day.
