I used to think that I didn't have any heroes. Not really you know, people I respect like my parents and sister, but no real heroes. I realize now that I do have heroes. People who have spread, taught, and learned knowledge and truth. People who are honest and want to know the world as it really is. All people that have fought to preserve truth and have spoken out are my hero's. My personal favorite are Richard Dawkins and Carl Sagan. Carl Sagan was a wonderful man, one thing I regret is not discovering him until this year. Sagan died December 1996, granted I was only 10 at the time, I wish I had known about him them. How would that have changed me? I don't think I really knew what an atheist even was at the time. I feel I've wasted my life being simple minded when all these brilliant people have lived and died without my knowledge. Where I have potential to understand and don't use it. Would I have ever known about Carl if I didn't chance upon his book "Demon Haunted World: Science as a candle in the dark."? Here is a quote I've borrowed from another web site:"There was no deathbed conversion," Druyan says. "No appeals to God, no hope for an afterlife, no pretending that he and I, who had been inseparable for twenty years, were not saying goodbye forever." "Didn't he want to believe?' she was asked. "Carl never wanted to believe," she replies fiercely. "He wanted to KNOW."(Ann Druyan, Carl Sagan's wife, from Newsweek magazine) http://www.mega.nu:8080/atheist_quotes_1.html If that stirs as much emotion in you as it did in me,perhaps you should send me a message. We would get along well.
