About Me


Giovanni Arena, nato a Catania nel 1965, bassista e contrabbassista.
Ha studiato all’Istituto Musicale Vincenzo Bellini di Catania con Nello Nicotra.
Ha studiato armonia e composizione con Francesco Calì.
Attualmente studia composizione con Massimo Leonardi e segue i corsi di composizione e analisi musicale con Alessandro Solbiati.
Contrabbassista dei Dounia, è autore di brani contenuti nei cd “New World” e “Monkey”.
Ha composto ed eseguito dal vivo con i Dounia musiche di scena per diversi spettacoli di teatro e per i readings “Dalle sponde del mare bianco” e “Quelli che bruciano la frontiera”, entrambi con il poeta tunisino Moncef Ghachem.
E’ bassista dei Libertango, gruppo fondato da Francesco Calì.
Con la cantante Cecilia Pitino, oltre ad aver collaborato come strumentista, è stato produttore artistico, arrangiatore e autore.
Con Carlo Muratori è stato musicista e produttore in vari progetti.
Ha suonato in studio e dal vivo con artisti di vari generi musicali: Eyal Maoz, Alfio Antico, Sepiatone (aka Hugo Race e Marta Collica), Juri Camisasca, Rita Botto, Giancarlo Parisi, Mukhtar Ahmad.
Giovanni Arena is an electric and acoustic bass player who was born in Catania (Italy) in 1965.
He studied double bass with Nello Nicotra at the Classical Conservatory “V. Bellini” in Catania (Italy).
He also studied harmony and composition with Francesco Calì.
Presently he studies composition with Massimo Leonardi, attends yearly classes of musical analysis and composition with Alessandro Solbiati.
Giovanni Arena is bass player in the band Dounia, for whom he has composed several tunes contained in the two CD’s “New World” and “Monkey”.
With Dounia he has also composed music for different theatrical performances and for the readings “Dalle sponde del mare bianco” and “Quelli che bruciano la frontiera”, both in the presence of the Tunisian poet Moncef Ghachem.
He is also bass player in the band Libertango, founded by Francesco Calì.
Giovanni Arena collaborated with the singer Cecilia Pitino as a bassist, artistic producer and arranger, as well as author of a few songs.
He was furthermore musician and producer in several projects with Carlo Muratori.
During his career Giovanni Arena has played different genres and styles with many musicians, both in studio and “live”: amongst others, Eyal Maoz, Alfio Antico, Sepiatone (aka Hugo Race and Marta Collica), Juri Camisasca, Rita Botto, Giancarlo Parisi, Mukhtar Ahmad.
