Renowned singer, "Jay McKay" got his start in music at the tender age of 7 when he was pushed by his choir directors and music teachers at his local church and elementary school to perform at concerts and enter talent shows. His earliest taste of fame came at age 11 when he was awarded 2nd place at the then popular Pepsi Teen Splash, doing a cover of Toni Braxton's "Breathe Again". He went on the next year to win the Sunsplash Reggae Road Trail by captivating the audience with a thrilling rendition of Brian McKnight's "One Last Cry".
At age 13, Jay (along with Kenville Thompson, Wayne Black, Jahdo Clarke and Cleveland.) formed the group 'Voices of Tomorrow' under the regime of super-producer Mickey Bennett from the famed Grafton Studios. Under his direction, Jay achieved popularity on the young adult scene, performing at countless teen concerts as well as major showcases such as "Ernie Smith & Friends", "Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival" and "Reggae Sumfest". After a 3 year stint with the group, he ventured out on his own to record his own single "Show Me The Way" on the M16 rhythm for Bootcamp Records. From there he went on to record for other famed producers such as Rudy Valentine and Bobby Digital.
With a desire to see how far his music career could take him, he took a break from his college studies (where he was pursuing a degree in Liberal Arts & Studies with a concentration in Performing Arts) and linked up with Madhouse Records in 2000. Guided under the wings of internationally acclaimed producer Dave Kelly, for the next 3 years, Jay was allowed to fully establish himself as a seasoned artist by recording locally and overseas with the likes of Foxy Brown, Beenie Man, Baby Cham, and Chico. These collaborations produced chart-toppers such as "Party Hard" (featured on the soundtrack to the movie "Blue Crush", Jay's biggest acheivement to date), "Cute" on the Fiesta rhythm, and "My Name is Dick" feat. Beenie Man which enjoyed major success as the 1 song on the South Florida, Eastern Caribbean and Tri-State Reggae Charts for months. He also toured with many of these artists, performing on shows such as "Reggae Sumfest" and "Irie Jamboree".
Other popular releases from Jay include "Ska Party", and "I Guarantee" feat. Dingo and Zinc Fence. Some of his latest collaborations include "All and Everything" with Aidonia and Chaos which has been receiving extensive airplay and heavy video rotation, "This Board House" feat. Twins of Twins and Bounti Killa, featured on their c.d. "The Crucifixion of the Ghetto", " and "ska bop" feat. Chico, Nicky B and Delly Ranks.
In the summer of 2004, Jay increased his repertoire by fusing and experimenting with various genres from classical and latin to jazz and urban alternative. From here, he took the responsibility of recording and producing his own material. Being off the mainstream music scene for a while, allowed Jay the opportunity to take matters into his own hands and really focus on his material as well as fine tune his craft. He constantly aspires to enhance and expand his creative genius on his quest to show the world what music means to him and why he is in pursuit of his this dream. Jay wants to maintain a deep connection with his fans by using music as a platform to express relatable life experiences. He beleives that by vocally exercising the pressing issues the inner-city society faces, that his music can be used as a vehicle for social change. His songs highlight the brighter as well as the darker side of love, life and relationships as the good and band both fuse to maintain a balance of both spectrums. His main objective in mind is to let his music warm the heart, stimulate the mind, uplift the soul and motivate especially those who remain voiceless, underrepresented and marginalized.
Jay is currently promoting a cover of Reggae classic, "Perfidia" as well as his original song "Sunshine" under the direction of Frankie Smooth Productions. Follow up songs include "Another Day" produced by Troy McKay of Yaadigans Poductions and "Free" produced by Sean Wizzle.
