======================================Edenite - (sic) Eden(ite) - A child of Eden. Someone who believes in a better life
where all are free from financial and political burden. The Edenites formed in the late part of 2003 following the death of a close friend of the original members. Initially a two piece Terry Gilmour and Greg Jarvis began writing songs to express and excise the sorrow and pain they felt at the loss of their friend, their angst particularly evident in the first two songs they wrote Pure Emotion Tainted Existence and 21st Century. Combining their various musical influences they struck upon an initial blend of mellow rock guitar with hip-hop beats. Being a two piece limited their ability to perform live so they focused on writing and recording. Using P.C. based software Fruity Loops and Cubase they started to build backing tracks to fit their songs and began teaching themselves the trade of music production and engineering. Using this blend of rock and hip hop they turned their song-writing attentions to the world. Tackling subjects ranging from minimum wage and global poverty through to child abduction and the legalisation of cannabis they built the following collection of mellow rock-based songs. 21st Century, The Message, Pure Emotion Tainted Existence, Heaven, Change and Deal I Made.
The Edenite sound was born and the three main ingredients were the heartfelt tenderness of the singing, the poetic pleading of the rap and the long soulful leadbreaks.
Having agreed from the beginning to incorporate their love of all types of music Terry and Greg decided to include some new styles while keeping the unique Edenite sound. They added to their collection next with a blues based heartbreak song "My Baby" and a dance/R&B love song called "I Want You". Over the next year to 18 months they spent all their spare time and money adding to the equipment they had and perfecting their recording styles in a corner of Greg’s garage often taking time to help other local musicians record and produce their own music.
By the February of 2005 the boys felt they were ready to start performing their music to live crowds. Starting initially at Jam nights in local pubs the two of them learnt to play with a range of different musicians and still keep the flow of their songs, even gaining the experience of having Mike Matthews formally of The Kinks play bass on their songs. These jam nights provided useful experience and gave them the urge to play proper gigs and allow themselves more time on stage. Using the backing tracks they had built on their computer Terry and Greg experimented with a variety of different equipment to back Terry’s live guitar, trying everything from a CD to an 8track and finally settling with an MP3 player. For the next few months The Edenites performed a handful of gigs at a variety of local pubs and venues in and around Enfield Town. In August of 2005 The Edenites entered a Pub Idol music competition in one of their local pubs The Hop Poles. Battling through five weeks of competition The Edenites suffered in the final for not performing a cover and finished runner-up. Although disappointed at not winning they were deeply encouraged at having knocked out vastly more experienced bands this was after-all on the back of only five gigs, besides the disappointment wasn’t to last. In November of the same year a second pub idol competition was announced at another pub The Old Hall Tavern in Chingford. This time after five weeks they were to emerge victorious as Pub Idol champions and with a thousand pound prize money to spend on equipment. The beginning of 2006 provided a boost for The Edenites, on a high from their Pub Idol win and with their own P.A. system and mixing desk bought with the winnings they were able to put on their own gigs. Combining with other local bands they put on nights in pubs around Enfield and also gigged further afield in venues like The Dublin Castle in Camden Town. They also began writing again adding to their previous songs with "Cast Myself In Stone" a funk based dance song about the coldness of the world, "Blazin Lazin" a funk/reggae number about sun filled smoking days and "Wot You Gonna Do" a heavy rock anti-poverty and war song. At this time they also gained a right-up in the local newspaper The Enfield Advertiser .
The Autumn of 2006 saw a new arrival to The Edenites and this was Duncan McMahon on rhythm guitar. With Duncan’s presence they were able to drop the secondary guitars off the backing tracks giving them a much cleaner sound. Making his live debut for The Edenites at The Enfield Autumn Show 2006, a festival arranged by the local council, in front of a large crowd Duncan was thrown in at the deep end and has never looked back. Comfortably sliding in alongside Terry and Greg his ability to learn songs at short notice perfectly suited The Edenites frantic writing sessions. The next few months saw The Edenites running full gigs and acoustic nights locally, developing useful ties with other North London artists, and it was at one of these acoustic nights that the fourth member was to make his debut in the February of 2007.
Steve Johns a long time friend of The Edenites and regular at their gigs grew tired of watching, picked up the bass and joined them on stage. Adding a whole new dimension to the band, their live sound improved dramatically with his arrival. His steady pace and melodic bass rifts brought a real fullness to their sound and encouraged the band to begin, once again, playing gigs further afield, performing at venues like Lark In The Park and The Hope and Anchor in Islington. It also gave the band a song writing boost and they added to their growing collection with "Welcome To London" a reggae ska party track driven by the funky flow of Jonzi’s bass, "Fight You Stand Alone" a soulful social commentary on gang culture and "Time And Time Again" a funk fuelled anti-war anthem. Their new much fuller sound was received very well by audience’s everywhere they played from the 19 Club in Enfield to Purple Turtle in Camden Town. Over the next few months The Edenites continued performing at both their own nights and those run by other promoters while always working on new material. They added "Badah Dandu" a rock-reggae love song and "We Should Be Good To Ourselves" a hip hop fuelled rant against conflict, to their repertoire further diversifying their sound. Now with a large enough back-log of music The Edenites were able to secure a monthly slot at a Ponders End pub The Ordnance in August of 2007. The full night slot allowed them to play the complete range of their catalogue and gave them time to include covers from artists like Cypress Hill and Warren G through to Dusty Springfield and Jimi Hendix always adding their own unique twist to the songs. It was at the first of these Ordnance gigs that the band were to recruit their final member.
Glenn a North London born drummer had shared the bill with The Edenites in his previous band on more than one occasion and had always spoken about working together. Now with a gap in his schedule a date was finally struck for a rehearsal and Glens’ natural ability and finesse backed the band perfectly. His ability and willingness to play different styles firmly cemented his place in the band allowing them to drop the backing tracks completely. Together as a full unit The Edenites continued to gig both locally and further afield in other parts of London performing at The 12 Bar in Denmark Street and The Enfield Autumn show 2007 where a picture of them performing was chosen to represent the days live music and printed in The Enfield Gazette. Splitting their time equally since then The Edenites have been performing and working on new material most notably "If We Don’t It’s Over" a reggae number about climate change and global conflict, and "A Letter From Sam" a heavy rock biographical story of a wife losing her young husband in a war abroad. Always continuing to evolve and adapt their sound to include their diversified musical interests the real question with The Edenites isn’t what they have done but what are they going to do next?=======================================================
