My name is Paul Daniel Taylor. Nickname WARNEY. Major teams include Australia, Hampshire, ICC World XI, Victoria & Templeton Cricket Club in Wantirna Victoria. Right hand Bat & Bowler. Leg break googly. Wisden Cricketer of the year in 1994, one-Day player of the year in 2000, Selected as one of the 5 Wisden Cricketers of the century in 2000, Test player of the year in 2006 and Premiership Skipper in 2007. At first there were nerves and then cam wild soaring legbreaks, followed by fame and flippers. or a long while women, then a bookmaker, then diet pills, then more women and more women again, and headline after headline. Now i have come out the other end, the bluff and bluster and mischief and innocence somehow intact. My life is like a soap opera. part fairytale, part pantomime, part hospital drama, part adults - only romp, part glittering awards ceromony. Have taken a test hatrick, won the man of the match in a World Cup Final, the first ever cricketer to take 700 wickets and how can i forget the ball that gazoodled Gatting in 1993, bouncing outside legstump and cuffing off. Unanimously eseemed the most famous in history. Clearly i revived legspin, thought to be extinct. For all of that perhaps my greatest feats are those of the past couple of years. Returning from a 12 month hiatus for swallowing forbidden diuretics, i swept aside 26 lankans in 3 tests, and the following year scalped a world record 96 victums and still missed out on the Allan Border medal. Forty of those were Englishmen in what sometimes appeared to be a lone stand in thrilling Ashes series. At the end i was helped by my stockpile of straight balls, a zooter, slider, toppie and backspinner, one that drifted in, one that sloped out and another that didnt budge. Yet i got my wrongun right and rarely landed the flipper. More than ever i relied on my two oldest friends: excruciating accuracy and an exquisite legbreak, exept i controlled the degree of spin and mixed it up- at will. Like the great classical painters, i stumbled upon the art of simplicity. Maybe as with Posh Spice or Kylie, i am more famous than loved. I dont think many fully appreciated my genius until the end of 06/07 ashes series when i achieved my final goal, the reclaiming of the urn; maybe, like Bradmans, it will become ever more apparent with the passing of decades. One things for sure though, cricket is now poorer without me.
