About Me

HyeKyung Lee (born in Korea) graduated from YonSei University studied with Chan-hae Lee, In-Yong Na, and Jae-Eun Ha. For graduate study at The University of Texas at Austin (DMA in Composition and Performance Certificate in Piano), she studied composition with Karl Korte, Donald Grantham, Russell Pinkston, Dan Welcher, Stephen Montague and piano with Danielle Martin and HeaSook Rhee. She also studied with Bernard Rands at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in March 1998 and Ladislav Kubik at the Czech-American Summer Music Institute in Prague 1995.HyeKyung has received awards from Harvey Gaul Composition Competition (Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble), ASCAP Standard Award, Composers Guild, Delius Composition Contest, Nancy Van de Vate Prize for Orchestral Music from International Alliance for Women in Music, Search for New Music Prize and Piano Trio Competition from IAWM, SEAMUS/ASCAP Student Commission Award, SCI/ASCAP student Competition commission, 7th Festival of Women Composers Composition Prize, and fellowships for residencies at the Ragdale Foundation, Djerassi Foundation, Millay Colony, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Villa Montalvo, Atlantic Center for the Arts, and MacDowell Colony.An accomplished pianist HyeKyung has performed her own compositions and others in numerous contemporary music festivals and conferences. She has also performed over 200 contemporary works by other composers during her tenure as a member of the UT New Music Ensemble. Her Piano Concerto No.1 (with HyeKyung as soloist) was performed by the University of Texas New Music Ensemble, University of Texas Wind Ensemble, CSU Fresno Wind Ensemble, CSU Stanislaus Wind Ensemble, University of Florida Wind Ensemble, Indiana University of Pennsylvania Chamber Ensemble, and University of Houston New Music Ensemble (with Yoojin Lee as soloist).Her Suite for Solo Piano is available on New Ariel Recordings (performed by Jeffrey Jacob), Opposed Directions for Disklavier and Live-electronics (performed by HyeKyung Lee) on Volume 8 of the SEAMUS CD Series, Quickly Casual for Violin, Cello, and two percussions) on Robin Cox ensemble Vol. 7, Saxophone Concerto on Mark Custom Recordings (performed by Havery Pittel with University of Texas Wind Ensemble and conducted by Jerry Junkin), and her Sonatina for Soprano Saxophone and Piano was published by Musik Fabrik (Vandoren Catalog), Paris, France.She was a Composer-in-Residence at Interlochen Arts Academy, University of Houston, University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory of Music, and was one of the featured composers for the American New Arts Festival at the University of Akron 2004. HyeKyung was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Hawaii, Bowling Green State University, Cleveland State University, and Oberlin Conservatory of Music. While she was in Hawaii, she finished the CD recording, "Blue - New Music for Saxophone and Piano," with saxophonist Todd Yukumoto, which featured the music by the University of Hawaii faculty composers including her own Sonatina for Soprano Saxophone and Piano and Musique Légère for Alto Saxophone and Piano (released by Equilibrium). Her commissioned work, Dreaming in Colours for Bassoon and Piano will be premiered by the contestants of young women bassoonists at the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition in Austin, Texas, June 2005.
