About Me

Tammy Gomez, a 2008 United States Artists award nominee, is a spoken word artist and multimedia performer who is recognized for her cutting edge performance art work, including the award-winning "Maya Matematica" and "Malinchuca," as well as her poetry--which has been widely anthologized.Tammy is profiled in _Las Tejanas: 300 Years of History_ (UT Press: Austin), and is featured in “Voices from Texas,” a PBS documentary film about Tejano/a poets. She has received grants from Humanities Texas, NALAC (National Association of Latino Arts and Culture), the Ford Foundation, and the City of Austin to support her work (theater, spoken word, lecture series). As an independent publisher (Tejana Tongue Press), she has published two anthologies: _In a Loud Kitchen: Voices of Yoniverse_ (1998) and _North Texas Neruda Love: poems, essays, testimonios in tribute to Pablo Neruda_ (2005).Tammy also produces PALABRAZOS, which is an annual festival of cutting-edge literary performance in Texas. She has also--at various times--been: literary publisher, radio producer and talk show host, events organizer, and educator/activist.In September 2007, the world premiere of her experimental obra de teatro, "She: Bike/Spoke/Love," drew a standing-room only audience and received critical acclaim.
