"IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I'VE HEARD SUCH UNRESTRAINED CREATIVE FORCES ERUPTING WITH SUCH MUSICAL FURY" The Mad Soundman of AMS Systems
Lupine Howl were formed from the ashes of the definitive Spiritualized line-up of the mid/late 90s. Sean Cook played bass and harmonica on the Spiritualized LPs ‘Fucked Up Inside’, ‘Pure Phase’, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space’ and ‘Live at the Albert Hall’. Mike Mooney, after playing with Echo and the Bunnymen and Julien Cope, joined Spiritualized in 1996. Jonny Mattock played drums for Spacemen 3, Spiritualized (on ‘Laser Guided Melodies’ and ‘Pure Phase’), The Perfect Disaster and The Breeders. After being sacked from Spiritualized in 1999, Cook and Mooney decided to form Lupine Howl. In between working with the likes of Massive Attack, Beth Gibbons, Jim Reid and Elizabeth Frazer and with the assistance of drummer Damon Reece (Echo and the Bunnymen, Spiritualized), the band set up their own record label, ‘Vinyl Hiss’ (with their manager, Matt Booth). Through this label they released two singles, ‘Vaporizer’ and ‘Bronzage’ before selling the band and the label to Beggars Banquet in 2000. In 2001 they released the LP, ‘The Carnivorous Lunar Activities of Lupine Howl'. In 2002 they released the LP, ‘The Bar at the End of the World’. Always disobedient and irreverent, the band were out of step with the safe, wet behind the ears young groups that were coming through at that time and, as a result, ended up parting company with Beggars around 2003. However, the band continued to record through their own resourcefulness and recorded their third LP which, as yet, remains unreleased. The band has never actually split up but the individual members have become involved in other projects and interests. Despite this, they intend to release the lost third LP at some point. Meanwhile, Sean Cook has been working on a new project, The Flies. The Flies are signed to No Carbon/Universal Records and currently have a self-titled mini-LP available for download from iTunes and all other major sites. The Flies debut full-length LP, ‘All Too Human’ is released in October 2007. The release is preceded by a single, ‘High’ which is accompanied by a video directed by Julien Temple (‘The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle’, ‘The Filth and the Fury’, ‘The Future is Unwritten’). ‘High’ is released on September 3rd, 2007.
