Bratach Bana are a bunch of friends who met at a local folk club in the North East of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, who became a large part of the clubs' concert party group going out to play at old folks homes, charity gigs etc.
The big break came when they were asked to play for a Ceilidh for a local hall to raise funds for them, there was about 180 people there that night and a good time was had by all!!
It was sort of decided that they should actually form an "official" band just for playing the odd gig here and there, but nothing too serious, anyway, funny how things change over time!! One of the changes was a change in line up, back then they had anything ranging from 3 to 9 members, so they were streamlined!
The bands' fiddler Sandy, joined them at a gig they were playing in his local venue for one night and they have not let him go yet!! Both Sandy (Fiddle) and John (Accordian and Guitar) are the back bone of the band, with Barbara Ann (Vocals and Piano) and Scott (Guitar, Bazouki, and Vocals) coming a close second with the main/lead vocals, Eddie (Bass, Bazouki, Whistles, Flute and Vocals) and Andy (Guitar, Tom Toms, Bodrahn, Mandolin and Vocals) are essentially the rythm and backing vocals and anything else that needs to be done to fill in the sound!!
The highlight of the bands' very short career so far has been a spectacular gig where they firstly supported the world famous Scottish singer Fiona Kennedy and then they backed her for the rest of the night, this was the turning point for them, they knew then that when Fiona said that they were good enough to go on tour with that they had made some sort of impression on her!! Watch this space for forthcoming gigs with Fiona in the near future!!
This band loves playing music and so have just come out of the studio after recording their whole album in one weekend, with one or two nights of tweaking, and they can't wait to get out there to promote their album and music and to help spread the gospel that folk music does not have to mean lots of old men with beards standing singing with their fingers in thier ears wearing white wooly jumpers, if you have seen them then you know that this is true and if you have tried to keep up with the Orcadian Strip the Willow then you have done well to still be breathing!!
Treat yourselves to something a wee bit different this year, get out and see them if you can, if you cant then make sure that you check out thier website and buy the long awaited first album called Shetland Lights, which is on sale now!
