Field Trip

About Me

Coming out of a colourful and vibrant artistic community in the Blue Mountains, Field Trip have been developing an interesting mix of sounds... influenced partly by the local Reggae & Hip Hop scene.Field Trip is a trio, consisting of singer/songwriter/producers Jack Mandhu, Mirabai (Mimi) & Papa Richie, a Reggae/Dub producer and resident sound engineer at the Hotel Gearin, in the Blue Mountains. The band formed out of a deep freindship between three aspiring musicians, united through a common love of reggae, soul & funk. The music and lyrics are inspired by roots reggae, mysticism & philosophy - particularly ideas that break down the illusion of separateness, and reveal the interconnectedness of all things.Field Trip are currently recording their debut album.. creating an ecclectic mix of r'n'b, funk, soul, reggae & hip hop.ORIGIN STORY.. Field Trip originated from a reggae/roots inspired band called I&I - which was formed in 2006 by Jack Mandhu (guitar/vocals) & Mimi (keys/vocals)... who were later joined by Richie Wait on drums, and Dave Crestani on bass.I&I had only performed a couple of gigs at Katoomba night club 'Tris Elies' before coming to apeaceful end in 2007. Jack Mandhu & Mirabai moved on, joining a couple of 'Red Room Special' jam sessions (also at Tris Elies). Using original lyrics sung over reggae riddims, they jammed as 'Version Galore' with local muso friends including Rory (The General) on bass, Papa Richie on guitar, Dubs ..s, and El Gusto on drums. In late 2007 Jack Mandhu & Mimi retreated into their studio.. and a period of intensive musical development followed, as they dove deep into the creative soup and continued to write/produce new songs. Renewed from refining their sound, an organic collaboration with their close friend Papa Richie developed - and and they re-emerged.. in mid 2008 'Field Trip' was born. All the band members of Field Trip also perform with Katoomba Dub Collective (KDC), a traditional reggae band.

Winner of the Silver Dragon at the Beijing International Science Film Festival 2006. OUTLINE: Man is the only creature that produces landfills. Natural resources are being depleted on a rapid scale while production and consumption are rising in nations like China and India. The waste production world wide is enormous and if we do not do anything we will soon have turned all our resources into one big messy landfill. But there is hope. The German chemist, Michael Braungart, and the American designer-architect William McDonough are fundamentally changing the way we produce and build. If waste would become food for the biosphere or the technosphere (all the technical products we make), production and consumption could become beneficial for the planet. A design and production concept that they call Cradle to Cradle. A concept that is seen as the next industrial revolution. • Design every product in such a way that at the end of its lifecycle the component materials become a new resource. • Design buildings in such a way that they produce energy and become a friend to the environment. Large companies like Ford and Nike are working with McDonough and Braungart to change their production facilities and their products. They realize that economically seen waste is destruction of capital. You make something with no value. Based on their ideas the Chinese government is working towards a circular economy where Waste = Food. An amazing story that will definitely change your way of thinking about production and consumption.
