During anxiety or worry, the "...emotional and physiological responses to aversive imagery are actually suppressed. This suppression of emotional and aversive physiological responding may serve to reinforce the process of worry. Because worry suppresses physiological responding, it also insulates the person from fully experiencing or processing the topic that is being worried about, and it is known that such full processing is necessary if extinction of that anxiety is to occur." ~~ i.e. : the left hemisphere of the brain that deals with speech, language, logic, symbolic processing, etc. is kept active as the right hemisphere that deals with imagery (nonverbal), intuitive & concrete processing, and imagination, etc. has its activity stalled. In this manner, anxiety functions (as a positive, adaptive reinforcer) to suppress the overall picture or visual image of the problem, serves for coping and preparation, and as avoidance of deeper emotional topics (along with a possible motivation device) :)
