I have been playing in indie rock bands since I was 17. I am now 33. I’m a self taught musician. I mainly play drums and do what I can with all the other instruments. Sparagmos is my solo work, though with sporadic help from friends. I’ve been recording this stuff from my house for about 7 years which has produced four CDs; Sparagmos 2001, Mood Sketches, 2004, Entwine 2006, Shadows and Silhouettes 2007 and Life Conditions in 2009. I basically write this stuff because it pops in my head and I need to get it out. It’s mostly for me as a hobby and for a few friends. So what’s up with the name? A long time ago, my good friend Nat showed me this book (don't remember the title) about how music can be understood through the diametrical natures of order and chaos, and metaphorically between Apollo (generally order) and Dionysus (generally chaos). I relate my musical feelings mostly to the chaotic, transcendental end of things, though plenty of order comes through. Order and Chaos are of course relative to the individual. Not being the most proficient player, I am always looking to push my own boundaries in playing and song writing. In the rituals of Dionysus, the disenfranchised of society (in ancient Greece this was mostly women and the poor) would go out into the woods and through music, intoxicants and dancing would attempt to “free†themselves, at least for a time, from the oppressiveness of their society. The “Sparagmos†is the ritual rending apart, limb from limb, of animals, and in earlier mythic treatments men, (see Orpheus and Pentheus). If you require more info see this fairly informative link below. Its petty interesting stuff to me, but not likely to you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dionysian_Mysteries Anyone’s feedback is welcome, thanks for listening.
