The Hat (A Musical)

About Me

This story, takes place partially in Jamaica, but mostly in a New Hampshire apple orchard during the presidential election year. This story is about humanity, empathy, synchronicity, faith, hope, and LOVE! The hat in this story has supernatural powers and retains the thoughts and feelings of each person that wears it. The hat makes it's way from humble migrant worker to the newly elected president's head. At the victory party, a supporter's young child innocently places the hat on the president's head. Suddenly the new president sees the world and his position in it through completely new eyes, the eyes of the common people. It is left up to the audience whether this will change the world for the better or not. These amazing yet humble events of synchronicity happen in our lives on a regular basis, but many times they are not even noticed. This play is meant to point out not only the humble exsistence of the migrant workers and farmers, and how important they are to our economy; it also points out how mysterious life can be, and how little acts of faith and courage can go a very long way in changing the course of the world. May it be suggested that everyone wear a hat when attending this play, unless of course you are deathly allergic to hats. In that case bring a small trinket item to pass on to another person sitting beside you. Help promote synchronicity! We thank you for your cooperation, and positive energy! What's Inna Hat? There were no less than nine new hopefuls. One woman came with a slew of supporters to throw a hat in the hat – literally. Jennifer Cole pitched “The Hat” a musical of mixed genres including Reggae. Now that’s a new one. Most intriguing." View our blog page at: http://spiritsistersproductions.blogspot.com/

Band Members: George Brown, is our number one character.....if it wasn't for George we would have never gotten the music done! Thank you George!!Characters List: 1. Rueben: A humble and very spiritual Jamaican migrant worker. He buys a new hat from a hat-maker in his country, just before he leaves his family for the next 6 months to work the US farmlands. He sings a song about how much he loves his family and will always be with them, no matter where he may be. He is very concerned about leaving, as Charise is expecting their second child. 2. Charise: Rueben's wife and mother of his children. Sings the first song with Rueben. 3. Rueben & Charise's daughter: (about 7-8 years old) Small non-speaking part at the beginning. 4. The Hat-maker: A very eccentric Jamaican Rastafarian, who thanks his Creator for all that he has and for the ability to make garments to feed his family. This person has a powerful revelation while finishing the details of the hat. He sings a song (What's inna Hat) just after making the hat. He sings about what is in a hat...not just how it is made but what is actually inside being sheltered by it, our minds, our thoughts, our dreams and ideas. 5. Jack: Tourist in the Jamaican hat shop. 6. Doris: Tourist in the Jamaican hat shop. 7. Jonah: Rueben's close friend and co-worker. He has been depressed after the death of his wife almost two years ago. Sings a song about being worn out by his life and missing his wife. 8. Eli: A Reggae musician with a short temper and no desire to be a migrant worker! He's forced to return to work at the farm when someone steals his instruments. He sings a song about hating to pick apples, and wanting to be the musician he was meant to be. 9. Farmer Fred: Hard working farmer, has alot of work to do. He is very worried about losing his farm if Tom Doherty is elected as the new president. Farmer Fred is very hard on the migrant workers, even though he knows they are the backbone of his business. He has tried to get local help, but they don't last longer than a week. He sings a song about having to be hard on everyone just to get the work done. 10. Caleb: Farmer Fred's Son: Unlike his Dad, he not only knows how hard the work is, he knows what is feels like to be yelled at by his father. He has bonded with the migrant workers. He really hates it when his Dad yells at anyone. Caleb is on the verge of standing up to his father and defending the workers the next time he is mean to them. He doesn't have a singing part. 11. Anna: Earthy, hippy girl who leads tours around the farm. While the children pick apples, she plays guitar and sings a song about picking apples. Anna takes care of her aging grandmother and is having trouble financially. She too is worried about what the election will mean to her and her grandmother. 12. Mary: Works in the farm store. She is very concerened about political and social issues. She agrees with Fred when it comes to politics. She listens to local talk shows and news on the small TV or radio in the farm store. 13. The Farm Dog (Pixie): Who understands everyone without having to wear the hat, but isn't surprised to see and feel the thoughts and feelings of each previous wearer when the hat is placed on her head. (Pixie howls) 14. Doherty Supporter: A relative of the presidential candidate who brings the hat home with her child. (she sings a song about supporting her favorite politician.) 15. Abbie: Daughter of the Doherty Supporter (about 7-8 years old) who plays with the farm dog and the hat. (sings a song at the orchard about the hat and dog. She brings home the hat, and at the presidential victory party, she innocently places the hat on the newly elected president's head. 16. Abbie's Friend: Plays with Abbie in her room with the hat and toys. 16. Tom Doherty: A very prominent businessman and local governor. If elected he plans on making war a big business and continue the one currently going on. He supports genetically modified commercial farming throughout the entire Earth. If elected he plans on spending lots of money putting the country trillions of dollars in deficit, and will support all his big US business friends, no matter what the cost. Sound familiar? ( He sings a song before and after he wears the hat. 17. The Hat: A Humble looking hat that blocks the sun rather nicely, and is simple in design. However, this hat is not just your everyday hat, it has special powers that record the thoughts and feelings of each wearer and plays them back into the next wearers mind. It also gives the wearer a feeling of total inner peace and harmony with the world and everyone in it. Whoever wears the hat suddenly feels and understands the essence of each previous wearer. These feelings and thoughts stay with the person who has worn the hat, even if they wear the hat for a few minutes.
