About Me

Nike of Samothrace(Niki tis Samothrakis in Greek), is a marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike (Victory), discovered in April 1863 by Charles Champoiseau, an archeologist serving at Adrianople as consul for France, he found over 100 pieces of marble on the island of Samothrace, overlooking the Aegean sea.He arranged to have these pieces transported to Paris, where they were reassembled at the Louvre into one of the most famous statues the world has ever known: the imposing eight-foot-tall Nike, Greek Goddess of Victory.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

In 1950, a team led by Karl Lehmann (Samothrace archaeologist and art historian) unearthed the missing right hand of Nike. The hand had slid out of sight under a large rock near where the statue had originally stood. The hand, with thumb and finger reattached, is displayed at the Louvre in a glass case next to the statue.
