Laurel Music

About Me

Laurel Music started as Tobias Isaksson's solo project. In 2001 Labrador Records presented him with vocalist Malin Dahlberg and asked the two to collaborate. At the time Malin lived in Umeå and Tobias in Göteborg, but the idea was so exciting that the two immediately began exchanging letters and mixtapes. Soon they were close friends. Later on Malin moved back to Göteborg and the drummer Max Sjöholm joined the band. On stage the band has appeared as anything from a duo to a sextet with help from the friends Christian Ljung, Per Larsson and Björn Kleinhenz. Between 2002 and 2006 Laurel Music did about 40 live shows in Sweden, The UK, Germany and Finland. On Labrador Records the band released their debut single »Sacred Heart« on 7" vinyl in 2003. It was followed by the CD single »Dreams And Lies« and the beloved debut album »This Night And The Next« in 2004. In the summer of 2005 the band recorded an emotional, melodic album that goes under the working name »Cycles«. The ambiguous fate of its 13 songs is a minor mystery.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: laurelmusic.se
Band Members: Tobias Isaksson (guitar etc), Malin Dahlberg (vocals), Max Sjöholm (drums)
Influences: The Smiths was probably the best pop band ever. If you add Felt, The Go-Betweens, Scott Walker, Tim Hardin and Astrud Gilberto you can pretty much sum up the reason that Laurel Music came to exist. The song that we all love the most as a collective is probably Ida's »So Long« from the album »The Braille Night«. We have played it live several times. As the sucker I (Tobias) am for romantic, timeless music I would like to mention a few songs that, to some extent, have changed my life. :)The Walker Brothers - We're All Alone, Tim Hardin - How Can We Hang On To A Dream, Astrud Gilberto - The Shadow Of Your Smile, Scott Walker - The Bridge, Ida - So Long, Claudine Longet - It's Hard To Say Goodbye, Colin Blunstone - Though You Are Far Away, The Ruffin Brothers - Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)[Delfonics cover], Fleetwood Mac - Dreams, The Innocence Mission - Follow Me [John Denver cover], Morrissey - Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning, The Smiths - I Know It's Over, Ida - So Long, The Triffids - Save What You Can, The Go-Betweens - Hope Then Strife, Felt - All The People I Like Are Those That Are Dead, Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'aime... Moi Non Plus, Sunhouse - Hard Sun, Mazzy Star - Flowers In December, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Ship Song, The Magnetic Fields - Papa Was A Rodeo, Red House Painters - Have You Forgotten, Sade - By your Side, Stina Nordenstam - Soon After Christmas, Rickie Lee Jones - Skeletons, Tom Waits - Take It With Me, Ron Sexsmith - It Never Fails, Bruce Springsteen - Racing In The Streets, Van Morrison - Have I Told You Lately, Neil Young - Like A Hurricane, Bob Dylan - I Threw It All Away, Dionne Warwick - Heartbreaker, Bobby Hebb - Sunny, The Mamas & The Papas - California Dreamin', Elvis Presley - If I Can Dream, The Korgis - Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime.
Sounds Like: »This Night And The Next« was soft country pop. »Cycles« is inspired by 80's and 90's guitar pop.
Record Label: Labrador
Type of Label: Indie
