My name is Melissa. I am currently a junior at UTSA studying to be an elementary school teacher. I’ve always considered becoming a teacher, but it is the job that I have now that has truly inspired me to make my final decision to enter the field of education.
I was recently promoted to primary manager of the after school program at Nichols Elementary. I have worked at Nichols and Monroe May Elementary and absolutely LOVE it! I can go into work so upset, having the worst day ever, wanting to cry, and 30 minutes later, I am smiling and laughing and have forgotten that anything was ever wrong. It is amazing what children can learn from you and what they can teach you every single day. I am such a sap when it comes to my kids at work. I LOVE them and would always care for them and protect them as if they were my own no matter what they may do. Knowing that I am having such an impact on these kids’ lives and seeing how much they care about me in return makes working with children and becoming a teacher the most rewarding job possible for me (even though I know that I’m going to get paid crap). It is worth every second! For the first time in my life, I know exactly what I want to do, and it feels amazing!
This semester I will also be starting a second job tutoring for math at UTSA (I swear I’m not as big of a geek as I sound!).I absolutely love to write, read, dance, color and do art (yes, there’s that elementary school teacher in me), visit my parents in Maine, visit my old friends and brother Nick in California, go to the pool or beach, do random dumb spontaneous things, and spend time with my best friends. I also love to work out. It’s pretty much the greatest high. Just like seeing my kids at work, going to the gym can change any bad mood into a great one. Godda love those endorphins! Oh yes! Speaking of things that make me happy…I have this really great boyfriend Matti who makes me laugh and smile like all the time! He is fun, outgoing, cute, sweet, and totally drama free! He is the best. : )I have been through and done some things in my past that make me grind my teeth a little, but I am thankful that they happened. Had they not, I wouldn’t be who I am today nor would I have learned the things that I have. No regrets, just life lessons that keep me from repeating history. All in all, I am extremely happy and content. I know what I want. I know what I’m doing, and there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about just how blessed I am for all that I have and thank God for being so lucky.
