ENGLISH:
Wales' premier world music festival, Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau, today announced one of its most exciting line-ups to date with the news that Steve Earle, The Dubliners, Damien Dempsey, Trans-Global Underground, Davy Spillane & Paul Dooley, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, plus a host of Welsh and International acts are all set to grace the festival’s 6 stages this year.
Other international performers include Country music stars, Tia McGraff and Allison Moorer, and traditional folk exponents Shona Kipling and Damien O’Kane, while the legendary Meic Stevens and TV-star and folk singer, Ryland Teifi, head an inspired list of new and established Welsh talent appearing this year. See below for a full festival line-up.
Steve Earle, one of the most highly respected singer-songwriters in America today brings his own compelling brand of rock and roll to the festival when he headlines the Friday night concert on July 21. Earle's music has received no less than 11 Grammy nominations and moves freely from rock to progressive country (alt.country) to folk and all genres back again. Also set to tread the main-stage boards that night is the highly lauded Irish folk singer, Damien Dempsey, described by many as the man with the future of Irish songwriting in his hands, and a huge following throughout the UK, US and Europe. Ryland Teifi adds an exciting Welsh dimension to the evening with songs from his new album, Under The Blue, while rave-faves Trans-Global Underground take the party into overtime with their eclectic mix of house, dance, and world beat music.
Legendary Irish folk pioneers, The Dubliners, headline the Saturday night concert on the main stage on July 22. Celebrating over 40 years together, the band are known the world over for such classics as Seven Drunken Nights, Whisky In The Jar and Black Velvet Band and their massive re-released hit with the Pogues, Irish Rover, make their debut at Sesiwn Fawr. The distinctive Irish flavour of the night continues with Davy Spillane and Paul Dooley. Spillane is a recognised master of the Uilleann pipes and was a member of the seminal Irish folk band, The Moving Hearts, in the 1980's before moving onto a very long and successful solo career.
This year’s festival boasts some of Wales’ hottest new bands including Mattoidz, Radio Luxembourg, who were recently voted BBC Radio Cymru’s Best New Band, and Genod Droog who push the envelope in a special collaboration with The Welsh Sinfonia.
At least one further new Welsh act will join the party with BBC Radio Cymru polling its listeners over the coming months to grant a brand new artist or band a chance to play at this year's Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau.
Dolgellau stands in the beautiful valley of the River Wnion at the foot of Cader Idris and within easy reach of the beautiful sands of Cardigan Bay. The town¹s wonderful granite architecture is a majestic backdrop to this incredible music festival which is held on a large green site in the town. The festival, with its six diverse stages, offers a unique cultural mix of world rhythms and sounds.
