Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky have all left their indelible mark on the British music scene. Local artist, Nicole Blaze, is on the cusp of joining that exclusive club. Her use of beats brings a provocative rawness to her music, and her distinctive vocal delivery pushes the listener to another level. When you see her perform on stage it’s hard to believe this Bristol born musician was shy at school. “I spent most of the time deep in thought, day dreaming I guess. I was into arts, crafts and big on sport,†Nicole explains with a smile. “To take away the stresses of being a teenager I used to sing. I’d close my eyes and belt out a track pretending I was Whitney Huston on stage,†she giggles. At 17 Nicole was given the opportunity to work with a local music producer, “That was it!†she states emphatically. “That was the creative avenue I was searching for. When I’m making music I mentally go to a different place.†Nicole went on to work with drum ‘n’ bass pioneer Roni Size and newcomers Drew Milligan, Krunchie and Ronnie Ubo. Studying drums and piano has given her an unconventional approach to music writing. Her sound pulsates with driving beats laced with sweet melodies. There’s also an undeniable nod in her writing to some of her old skool heroines such as Salt ‘n’ Pepa, Queen Latifah, Missy and Mary J.BligeHer live performance inspired her friends to give her the nick name Blaze. She explains, “I just came off stage and my friends were going crazy around me. They were like, ‘you’re like on fire, a full blazing fire, you didn’t stop until the music had stopped, like a fire roars until it’s dowsed with water!’ and that was it, over night I became Nicole Blaze!†she explains.Softly spoken and radiating a beauty from within, it is hard to believe that Nicole is also a martial arts expert – but she is, and she takes it very seriously. “The discipline is good for me. It also helps my stamina when it comes to my live shows,†she enthuses. She’s already taken her show to Moscow, Dubai and Germany where she left the crowds mesmerised. “When people listen to me or see me play I just want them to completely escape from their troubles. The message behind my music is to ‘enjoy life’ and whilst they’re listening I hope they can escape day to day life and join me in a fantasy world.â€Nicole is currently in the studio working on her debut album with a soon to be release EP in April 2007. It won’t be long until she can share her energy and distinctive music – I know one thing for sure, our lives a whole lot brighter when she does.
