Chris Cochran - The Original Gambler Talks Turkey....or at Least Ham & Eggs!
Originally from Miami Springs, Florida, Chris is also a Berklee College of Music graduate with a major in Music Production & Engineering and Jazz Composition. His principle instrument is trumpet, but says that he plays a little guitar, and also piano.
Chris performed for several years with the Florida Wave Drum & Bugle Corps, and the Miami-Dade Community College Concert Jazz Band. Chris says, “Miami’s Jazz Band is the only community college jazz band to be invited to play at the Montreaux and North Seas Jazz Festivals to date as far as I know.†Chris adds, “I also played with the Back Bay Brass Band at Berklee and more small jazz combos and Latin bands than I care to count.â€
When Chris is not in the studio, he says, “ I love playing poker and chess, and I really enjoy reading. Sci-Fi authors Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert, Philip Jose Farmer & Arthur C. Clarke, books on history penned by Chester G. Hearn, Bevin Alexander, William C. Davis and William L. Shirer. As far as Classic and Contemporary Fiction, I read works by such notables as Hunter S. Thompson, Anne Rice, Stephen King and Oscar Hijuelos, and philosophy, a personal favorite, by authors including Joseph Campbell, Ayn Rand, Aristotle, Miyamoto Musashi and Bruce Lee. I also enjoy psychology, Mike Caro and Alan Schoonmaker come to mind, and of course anything on audio engineering!â€
Chris says, “I want to find the person who came up with the phrase, ‘we’ll fix it in the mix’, and put a serious beat down on them! When it comes to recording an engineer must make a commitment to always do their best all the time, no excuses.†Chris believes that, “The key to doing your best is by making a commitment to excellence - wishing is not enough. Neither is mere involvement.†Chris has an interesting take on that point. He says, “There's a difference between involvement and commitment. It's like ham and eggs. The chicken is involved; the ham is committed!â€
Chris says the one question always asked of him is: “Which is better, Berklee or Full Sail?†He says, hopefully for the last time, that the answer is (drum roll, please), “They are both high quality schools. It’s neither about the gear nor the amount of time you get in the studio, or even about what type of information you get in lecture. Only one thing determines which school is better for you as a student, and that is your commitment to excellence. Are you going to be proactive and attend lecture and lab, or are you going to sit on the sidelines just wishing and hoping you get a passing grade so you can graduate?†Chris adds, “Just remember, this knowledge without discipline is wasted, and talent without knowledge is merely unrealized potential. Learn from the instructors and the fellow students you have in your class that are committed to being the best engineers they can be, and model their behavior.â€
Chris believes that his philosophy on life, and what part luck has in your career, comes down to these two quotes:
“Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeatâ€
President Theodore Roosevelt
“Ni bhionn an rath ach mar a mbionn an smacht “*
