My Interests

I'd like to meet:

You tell me, if you can.

My folks used comics as well as children's books and toys with the alphabet as part of their purpose to teach me to read. Comics seem innate. And by the time it came to take photos with a camera, the crossover was there: Photographing images with an eye for dramatisation and information.

I keep scrapbooks like a girl. It's like time confetti once you pour back over them again. It doesn't take very long for what happens in the moment to piss by at a rate of knots. So these books jammed with art and flyers and childish indulgence are the literal scraps of the passing moment. Eva Dixon was somewhere I visited in Wellington some time ago - and look at it's magnificent extra-postcard sized promo! That one's a beaut!

This is from a two page strip about the center of my universe for several years in the 80's, Just Desserts. The other page is a goner, but this seems to say enough. I took a lot of photos and spent a lot of time in that comfortable old barn, even after the ugly stick got the walls. Sadly, Just Desserts closed in '88. As they say, a legend! This page is a result of mixed media. You might say: "Only real faces have been used."

HARD COPY, NO COPY:

At some point, I threw my box of negatives away. I have the photos, piled into plastic bags. The top photo is like a cover. If I don't possess the photo, the shot is gone; just gone. Like I'd never taken it, perhaps.

"There are an unlimited number of perspectives. I find optimism in that."

JIM JARMUSCH

"I've never gotten the same thrill out of having one of my cartoons printed in a magazine as much as seeing one of my fliers - something I did for a punk gig the week before - laying in the gutter. Seeing it all amshed and dirty thrilled me, because that was how I was living, too. It looked exactly like my life."

SHAWN KERRY, 1986

"Life in the late 20th Century is a supermarket stocked with appealing self-images."

GRANT MORRISON

"What we observe is not nature itself but nature exposed to our method of questioning."

WERNER HEISENBERG

"They say you can smell Calcutta ftom twelve miles away, but you can smell Hollywood all over the world."

JIM WOODRING

"My favourite thing is to go where I've never been."

DIANE ARBUS

The truth is, I'm incapable of learning, or rather, it's impossible to teach me. I get nothing except by instinct. And academic theory has no hold on me."
