My name is Simon Freddie Gates. I was born in Aylesbury, England in 1983. I spent alot of my childhood in Gaborone, Botswana where my family moved to live in 1987. I saw alot of southern Africa at a young age and this experience was the start of my involvement in Africa. For 8 years I had been back in England and in 2001 I decided I had to return and see with more experienced eyes the place I only knew from feel and memory....This took me to Malawi, where I worked as a volunteer in Chiradzulu with D.A.P.P. Child Aid Malawi. After that I returned again in 2005 with a friend to start a new project (Umodzi-Mbame C.B.O.)(unassociated with DAPP) in a different region of Malawi. We had private funding and were unregistered to start with. Now boNGO Worldwide (www.bongoworldwide.com) is registered as an N.G.O. and is forever expanding, thanks to all volunteers and particularly my friends and colleagues who are still the driving force behind this project. ....................................................... ABOUT MY MUSIC: Since a child i've been surrounded by African culture and this comes out through my music. In Malawi the first time was when I started writing songs in Chichewa. My music is very basic. I sing a melody to a rhythm. I'm not a well versed guitarrist and I can't read music.
