About Me
Hip Hop artist Young Merk AKA Reme Johnson is a product of Western Colored Township (Johannesburg), South Africa and the West End of Portland, Maine.Merk grew up in a vibrant, busy, social, activist household where Hugh Masekela and Millie Jackson played and curry cooked all day and late into the night. Reme’s mother Helen is half colored (mixed race) and half Indian. His father is a black South African. Reme has two siblings-his twin Rene and the baby of the family, Megan. Growing up, Merk was the quiet person in the house even though there was always somebody at the front door looking for him. Reme’s childhood bedroom was his escape from the world where he kept his art, displayed his graffiti and wrote the music which was an integral part of his daily life. Although constantly surrounded by curious onlookers and fans Reme has consistently composed, recorded and produced original music. His music has developed from elementary beats and amateur rap battles, to three full length CDs (The Golden Child, A Lesson Before Dying and Black September) and performances up and down the East coast.Reme’s music is intelligent, introspective and firmly centered on the streets.
