Sangers

About Me

Sangers is the cornerstone of the recent east coast Breakbeat revival in Australia. Resident of Queensland’s No. 1 Broken Beat night, Breaks & Enter, and member of the infamous ADICTS crew, he exploded onto the Australian dance music scene in 2007 with his trademark party vibe and crowd pleasing mash of solid drum-lines, phat bass and extensive sample selections. Learned in the many arts of mixology, Sangers is well equipped to deliver performances by a variety of methods…

Sangers:

As a solo DJ, Sangers delivers a tasty blend of Funk, Old Skool Hip Hop and Breakbeat with layers of Hip Hop samples and acapellas, in a very rare format… In the mould of Baltimore legend, A-Trak, Sangers is one of very few DJs to regularly perform a one-man “Dex n Fx” set: Mixing beats with traditional turntables and CD players and dropping acapellas and samples via his Ableton loaded MacBook and trusty Akai MPD. The result is a highly technical, avidly entertaining, energetic and dynamic exhibition of modern mixology, rivalled by very few in the scene.

Smoke n Run:

A recently formed project, Smoke n Run is the pairing of Sangers with lifelong friend, Butterz (Payback Project); a member of rival local Breakbeat/funk crew, Shifty Productions. With an extensive history together, and a common understanding that could be likened to a “left hand/right hand” analogy, the pair are able to delivers electrifying performances in one of the most technically difficult formats around; They title it the “Scratch n Sample” set: The basis of which is a back-to-back DJ set utilizing four decks but with alternating accompaniments, whereby Sangers drops samples via his Ableton loaded MacBook and Akai MPD whilst Butterz is mixing beats and, in the reverse situation, whilst Sangers is behind the decks, Butterz scratches up a storm. Loaded with party tricks, the Scratch n Sample set requires highly precise timing and understanding between the pair to be delivered to full effect and culminates in a tremendously entertaining, track-a-minute, shock and awe, broken beat showcase.

Sangers & Mash:

An ever-evolving project, Sangers & Mash is the titled designated to Sangers’ official pairing to a MC accompaniment. Ricky Jassim, aka, Mr C (Tres FP) was Sangers’ first “Mash”. They came together in late 2006 and devastated many an audience at the then, weekly, Breaks & Enter nights in Brisbane. Throughout 2007 they built a solid following of faithful fans and friends whom helped the pair reach No. 51 in the 2007 InTheMix 50 Poll and were billed for the 2008 Good Vibrations Music Festival before they parted ways due to personal commitments. Though rumoured to have a new lyrical partner, Sangers is yet to declare his new “Mash”. However he has recently worked with a variety of vocalists including N'Fa of the ARIA Award Winning, "1200 Techniques".

Adicts Collective:

Sangers attained notable fame in his short stint with and as founding member of the Adicts Collective – formally a six-piece (now five-piece) collective of DJs, musicians and vocalists – where he was responsible for dropping samples, acapellas and effects over the mixed beats of the other two DJs of the collective, Devastatin’ Dave and Verner. With percussionist, El Nino, trumpeter, Daz (DubDoubt) and beatboxer/MC, KNO (Modern Day Poets) in toe, the group grounded themselves in the Queensland scene with residencies at several leading Brisbane venues and landed bookings in Sydney (Destination?), Melbourne (Revolver), Perth (Ambar), Cairns (Velvet Underground) and a host of festivals, namely the Future Music Festival, BBQ Breaks, Sounds Boutique / Shake n Break and Ocean’s 30, until Sangers left the group in mid 2008 due to differences in musical direction.

As a solo artist, and as a member of his many partnerships, Sangers has played before audiences nationwide at many of the perennial venues and events in Australia including, the Empire Hotel (Moon Bar, Middle Bar and Corner Bar), the GPO Hotel (Code Bar and Seven40), Revolver (Melbourne), Destination? (Sydney), Bar Open (Perth), the Velvet Underground (Cairns), BarSoma, Geisha Bar (Perth) Uber, Dust Tones (Sydney), Rolling Rock (Sunshine Coast), Berlin Bar (Gold Coast), Ric’s, Step Inn, Good Vibrations Music Festival, the Future Music Festival, Stereosonic Music Festival, BBQ Breaks, Sounds Boutique / Shake n Break, Ocean’s 30 Sunset Festival and many others.

Under the title of Sangers and his many aliases, he has supported the likes of DJ Yoda & the Jedi Knights, A. Skillz, Alex Metric, Myagi, Plaza de Funk, NAPT, Boogie Army, Lady Waks, Tittsworth, Breakfastaz, Aquasky, the Skool of Thought, Friendly, B.L.I.M., the Rogue Element, Rennie Pilgrem, Superstyle Deluxe, Vlad, Hyperion, Madox, Riva Starr, Rob Reng, Myagi, Splitloop, Precision Cuts, the Autobots, Ctrl-Z, Koma & Bones, Nick Thayer, Bitrok, Deekline & Wizard, 30Hz, Janette Slack, Baobinga & ID, Capoeira Twins, Cut La Roc, Hyperion, Signal Drivers, Ninelives the Cat, Karl Sav and Diverted.
