The Hellenic TV 1 Channel has been broadcasting to the Greek speaking community of North London since 1990. It started as a cable TV channel in the London Borough of Camden and soon extended to the whole of North London reaching several thousand subscribers.
Beside Greek Movies, Greek TV serials and athletics Hellenic TV is the most popular entertainment amongst Greeks in the Diaspora. Hellenic TV is in tune with the preferences of the Greek speaking population in the UK. The advances in digital TV technology enable the Hellenic TV platform to be made available world-wide. In September 2006 Hellenic TV went digital on Internet broadband and in December 2006 Hellenic TV2 was established. Hellenic TV1 is now available both on analogue and digital while Hellenic TV2 is only available on digital.
The two Greek channels rebroadcast RIK from Cyprus and ERT from Greece in addition to the home produced programmes which are cantered around life in the Greek community in the UK. Every evening there Greek films on Hellenic TV1 and programmes such as review of the local Greek press and various community functions.
New programmes as well as fictional serials cantered around life in the community are currently at the planning stage. Watch this space for new developments in the near future.
