Hey guys, welcome to my Music Profile. Well, first of all, I have to say that Music is one of the most important things in my life. I have no idea what I would do without Music and I love it...ALWAYS! I have such a passion for music and I love...pretty much everything. I like diverse music, especially stuff that takes skill and has unique-ness. The drums are a big part of me and I thank God for giving me this talent and hopefully become a professional someday. Anyway, i have been playing drums for about 6 years and have self-taught myself and this year was my first year in Jazz band and Marching band. They have been pretty motivating experiences, but my school and its' music program seriously sucks and is a pain, especially the people I have to play the music with, because everything in High School has to be so dramatic and the kids their need to grow up. Everything seems to be a competition/jealous rampage and it is really annoying. I don't know why people can't just enjoy playing music! This has been getting on my nerves for awhile, but I try to just become a better musician and learn everything I can! Well, to get on the right track, i will now tell you how it all began for me...
When I first started at the age of 10, my mom bought a raggidy, old drumset from my uncle for me to start and see if I liked it. It was an ok beginners set...you can say lol. But I pretty much was just exploring the drums and tried to play everything I heard off the radio, and see if I could do it. At that time I wasn't taking it sereously and was just simply playing everything by ear and always listened to other bands and artists with my dad. He always made me feel motivated and excited about music, and he always taught me about Music and how to understand it. But as a few years passed, I started noticing, "Hey, maybe I could be doing this with my life." I was loving the drums so much, I was getting more and more into it, year after year and practice after practice but I wanted to listen to something more exciting and different. I was getting pretty tired of hearing the same old music over and over again, I wanted a challenge.
Then, summer came when I was 14 and I got my first Drum Video ever...Mike Portnoy's Liquid Drum Theater. I was stunned on how amazing this, Mike, guy was and studied him from the beginning to the end of his video. I was so opened and motivated on how he drummed with his style and I learned everything i could from him. He was my first hero and I was also introduced to the way Mike Portnoy's band, Dream Theater, had a unique style, Progressive Rock, like no other band I've ever heard, and I was so thankful i finally found a band that I loved. So after practicing during the summer, the year went by and all I listened to was Dream Theater, pretty much day and night lol. I was already 15 at the time. But as school passed, I wanted other challenges and learn other styles!
This year, I joined Marching Band and Jazz band. Jazz band this year, really got me into the style and beyond as Marching band helped me with my technique on how to play properly. As I was learning Jazz, my friend and also an incredible bassist, Will Wulfeck, helped me out so much trying to understand Jazz, funk, and fusion and understand the meanings of playing with a band. This got me into other drummers besides Mike P., like mainly Dennis Chambers, Thomas Lang, Dave Weckle, Neil "The Professor" Peart, and one of my other favorites, Tony Royster Jr. This has opened me up into other drumming techniques and music styles and have been learning that there ARE better drummers than just Mike P. that I didn't know about. Will also has helped me with counting rhtyms, time signatures, and notes, etc. since because throughout my years of playing I learned on how to "feel" the beats, not count, so I reversed it a little and had to try and learn the beginners way, which is weird to me, because i am learning backwards in a way. And I am still trying too! lol. But this year I have learned a lot and am continuing to. That is basically my long story short and i will keep you guys updated on my life. Hope you enjoy my Music Myspace! :)
