THE BIOGRAPHY OF PAUL "PROONEY" McKENZIEStraight out of high school without a job, the niece of Mrs. Rose Linton of Arrows Studios introduced him to Mr. Linton. Even though he wasn't too interested at first, they still gave him the chance to do something with his life and enrolled in a six (6) months course in Audio Engineering, but he completed it in three (3). He began working full-time for Arrows immediately. This was in 1993 and it was in 1994, Snagga Puss and Major Mackerel gave him the name Prooney, because Paul just wasn't working out for them at all.
Prooney resigned in 1999 from the studio because he migrated to New York for one (1) year. In 2001, he returned to Jamaica and got his job back at Arrows because they knew how good he was at his work. During his time overseas, the inception of his company began, in which he named Prooney Production. The first riddim he produced was released in the same year called Cross Breed which featured artists such as Greg Hines and Natty Chris from Red Square, a collaboration with Spragga Benz and Classical, Lexxus, Baby Wayne, Egg Nog, Powerman, a female artist by the name of Hypertension and another collaboration with Capleton and Kulcha Knox. The Executive Producer was Duron Folks and Royal Blend Music from New Jersey distributed it in New York and the rest of the Tri-State area. He engineered for "She's Still Loving Me" by Morgan Heritage on Arrows Recording Studio label, which Mr. Linton produced.
Wanting to do his own thing and push his production company some more, he resigned from Arrows again in 2004 and became a full-time Producer for Prooney Production. During this time, he also became the Road Manager for Lexxus for a year but in 2006, he went back to New York and worked at Don One Recording Studio in Brooklyn. While there, Don created a new one drop riddim with his musicians and gave it to Prooney, which was a remake of the riddim on which Garnet Silk's hit song "Kingly Character" was on but Don named it the Fight Riddim. He met Mr. Peppa in the Bronx and became his Personal Assistant, which he remains to be even now. Prooney came back to Jamaica in December 2006 and decided to change his company's name to Prooney Music. Mr. Peppa influenced the name change.
From ever since his time at Arrows Recording Studio, Prooney has always had great vibes within the studios which is why so many artists have preferred working with him to many other producers. He has a good eye for talent and has even been responsible for recognizing Merciless, Warrior King and Natural Blacks, who all went on to do big things in the dancehall culture. His experiences working with so many different characters and personalities have pushed him into realms of the music world like no other.
Look out for some more exciting stuff from Prooney Music, including a hardcore dancehall riddim called Suspense, the one drop riddims called Fight and Vanity made by Donovan Steele (singer), as well as some original riddims. He is always trying to find good new talent and believes in giving everyone a chance, so he plans to push more young artists onto the scene.
