About Me

Sephardic music is the unique music of the Sephardic Jews who are one of the three main ethnicities among Diaspora Jews, the others being the Ashkenazi and Mizrahi.Sephardic music was born in medieval Spain, with cancioneros being performed at the royal courts. Since then, it has picked up influences from across Spain, Morocco, Argentina, Turkey, Greece and various popular tunes from Spain and further abroad. There are three types of Sephardic songs - topical and entertainment songs, romance songs and spiritual or ceremonial songs. Lyrics can be in several languages, including Hebrew for religious songs, and Ladino. The last few years have seen the appearance of mostly female ladino singers. Kerensya (a ladino word which means ‘fondness’), appears in that context offering a fresh approach to Sephardic music, performed in this case by a male vocalist. The ensemble was established in 2006. It consists of a male singer, a guitarist, a ney/flute player and a percussionist. The show is called Roots. It aims to bring together a wide spectrum of music combining both Mediterranean Jewish and non-Jewish melodies whose origin goes back hundreds of years. Norman, the vocalist and band leader, has roots firmly planted in Argentina and the repertoire also includes Argentine Tango and Milonga.
