Alice Ferguson from Excentric Events said: ‘Excentric is on the look out for DJs who are just that little different…who have that edge… Cormac has played at number Excentric Events in London, Birmingham, Perth and is now heading over to do Excentric @ Kanya in Ibiza. He is a versatile and enigmatic DJ who quickly forms a special connection with the crowd then gives them exactly what they want. He has an obvious passion for music and the end result is an electrifying atmosphere, which as a promoter, is pretty inspiring and impressive thing to witness. Cormac definitely has what it takes to make it in this industry and he has it in bucket loads!
When meeting Cormac Mc Corry/Camroc, the first thing you notice about him is how approachable and easy going he is. It’s this character trait in particular that the 26 year old from Craigavon (Northern Ireland) transmits to the dance floor the very moment he presses play. This is just one reason why he is the latest name set to follow Fergie, Phil Kieran and The Japanese Popstars and explode out of the Northern Irish club scene.
A 14 year old Cormac was first inspired by DJs such as Steve Thomas, Guy Williams and the late great Tony De Vit, but it was a chance meeting with DJ Double D, a prominent DJ in the London club scene at the time, that persuaded him to beg, steal and borrow for a set of decks. Within a very short space of time he was already one of the only DJs in Northern Ireland to be pushing this sound and in just a year later he was a resident at the Night Flight Arena.
“It was the new fresh sound of nu-nrg and the DJ's like TDV who pioneered the sound that got me, It was a pure breath of fresh air amidst the hardcore sound that was around at the time.”
Via relentless pushing of his trusty mix tapes Cormac gained a residency at Centrepoint and word was spreading around Northern Ireland with a steady stream of gigs. Cormac however, had no intention of resting on his laurels.
“When the harder side of house started to sound stale, I started to think about where things were going. Tracks were just being recycled and remixed with nowhere near the same level of production or passion as a few years before. I spent hours listening through different styles when I found a lot of that energy again in the electro tinged house/techno that was starting to appear.”
It was at this cross roads in his short career that he decided to attend the widely respected KeyMix course in 2003, a course which has proved to be time and time again a breeding ground for many talented Northern Irish DJs. It was through KeyMix that he was given a major break with a set at Northern Ireland’s infamous Met Arena and it was here where he was first met Fergie.
“He came in to listen to me and told me to get his number as he was really impressed with my set. He said in an interview with Belfast Beat Magazine shortly after the gig that I was one to watch and a brilliant DJ.”
Sets at Love Saturdays at Club Matrix soon followed his Met Arena debut as well as a set at Northern Ireland’s Dance Music Awards and at the country’s biggest dance music festival, Planet Love. A packed out set at the mighty Lush with Col Hamilton, one of the most popular clubs in Northern Ireland, was a sign that things were starting to really kick off. It was at Lush where Cormac had another meeting with Fergie, this time warming up for him. Fergie promptly asked him to play at his own Excentric club night in London, at the legendary Turnmills. This was Cormac’s first taste of the mainland, and what a taste, playing alongside Adam Beyer, Smith & Selway and of course Fergie.
It is Excentric where the story is brought up to date, with gigs now lined up in the near future at the Excentric parties at The Key in London, Chic in Birmingham and The Ice Factory in Perth (Scotland). He will also be playing for Excentric at Kanya in Ibiza this summer, all of these alongside Fergie & Mr Henry Von and guests including Ozgur Can, Tom Pooks & Matt Tolfrey. Also on the horizon are gigs at Melt with Pedro Delgardo and Housekeeping with Micky Slim & Jus’ Phil.
Labels like Get Physical, Great Stuff and Novamute and producers such as Stephen Bodzin, Oliver Huntemann and Audio Jack are all a staple part of Cormac’s musical diet, as he continues to turn heads and move bodies with his dark and dirty electronica.
He’s now fresh from the studio with two brand new tracks under the ‘Camroc’ guise, which are already gathering interest and sealing the promise that Cormac Mc Corry is definitely one to watch in 2007!
