Do not be fooled by the relax personality and the simple expressions you get from Dwight St Michael Atkins AKA Gangsta Marv. Hearing the name would give us a picture which the personality of this individual does not show on the outside. He got the name from a friend because of his approach to the music.Born on December 8, 1981 in St Catherine Jamaica where he obtained his passion for dancehall, and never had to make an extra effort to feel comfortable around the sounds of reggae music. At age 16 Dwight migrated to the Washington DC metro area where he continued his education to prepare himself for the real world. The preparation due to parental advice was to be successful in the corporate world without having any consideration of being a dancehall reggae artist.He was influenced to get involved in the music in 2001 when he became the writer for his older brother who decided at the time that he officially wanted get his foot in the field of reggae. “This job was very helpful to me, putting lyrics together to create a source of entertainment is always fun and doing it over and over has helped me to improve on content and style.” With the understanding that an artist with excellent writing skills and the drive to get that check mark as a complete dancehall artist would be a great one has encouraged him to improve on his delivery and any other areas needed.In 2003, Dwight and his brother Punisha came together with two other friends, Mr.Tex & Tweeta Bird, and also a third person Spoogy who served as the manager of the group they formed called Ataclaps. The group became very popular along the east coast over a short period of time especially in the DC metro area, as they showed their talent by making different kinds of music both culture and hardcore dancehall. Gangsta Marv’s resume will show that he gained most of his experience as a member of this group, as they performed on majority of the shows held in their hometown. He was able to show the public the he has what it takes to be a memorable dancehall act.After the four years of being a part of the group, Ataclaps ended, he decided he wanted to continue his journey to success in the music business as an individual Artist. “The move was not very difficult for me because I had the confidence and know that if I continue to put in the necessary work it would be a matter of time before all the dots are connected.” And with a mind frame like this we can be sure that dancehall will see another superstar.It is very important that the characteristics of a dancehall artist includes great writing skills, focus, self motivation, great communication, and the ability to make quick adjustments. Can we comfortably say Gangsta possessed these characteristics?
