For 500 years our people have resisted in many ways. In 1492 it was directly against the european colonizers, in the 1970s it was in actions such as the Chicano Moratorium. Today it is still against colonization but as our people have changed so have our current ways of resistance. Today, young Xicanas and Xicanos in the Bay Area are learning our traditions as Indigenous people and organizing in our schools, community and to continue the resistance. Huaxtec is Nahuatl for the land. Our group has a direct connection to the land, as it is our source of strength and life. Our name honors women as they represent the land and both, Tonanzin(mother earth) and women keep and allow our generations to continue. We are a member of ODB(Organize the Bay Coalition) and we put on Xicana Moratorium Day in the Bay, every year. Currently we are engaged in a campaign to address the attacks on our people (because of immigration issues) and also to end the violence amoungst our gente.
