------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------- The Wayward Sinner Boys band was born out of frustration and isolation. This was due to a lack of bluegrass jam sessions in their native Dublin.Derek and Will had been playing in a ballad group in Ballyfermot for almost two years when they started down the old-timey/bluegrass root. Will, a lifelong rockabilly fanatic and (by his own admission) a frustrated wannabe double bass player, had approaced Derek in early 2005 with regard to forming a bluegrass band to air his own songs. However, Derek was in the middle of his Irish traditional buzz (and still is, for that matter!). They ended up, in true Ballyer style, going down the ballad root.Fast forward to early 2007, when Derek was by now obsessed with the old-time clawhammer style of 5-string banjo playing, mainly associated with the Appalachian region in the US. Will, once again, meantioned to Derek about getting some sort of bluegrass feel going. While all this was going on in Ballyfermot, on the other side of Dublin city in East Wall, a bluegrass mandolin player (Aran) was experiencing the same trouble regarding jam sessions.A well-known musician at the Rosie O'Grady's bluegrass session (now on hold, for the moment) and big bluegrass fan, he was looking for a more regular jam band.Strange to think that, as a child, Aran had desperately tried to avoid this style of music, probably due to over-exposure (his family even organised bluegrass festivals!). Anyway, after having gotten hold of a mandolin, the music got a hold of him and he never looked back. This leads us straight into the mix of the Wayward Sinner Boys band, the name being a compromise of all three members, having experimented with pseudonyms incorporating all forms of debauchery and genitalia. After having come into contact and meeting up, the trio now hold regular jam sessions in Ballyfermot and East Wall, enjoying the collective sound of old-time, bluegrass, skiffle, django styles etc. Now that the isolated frustration has gone, they're now on a mission to expand the group ( fiddlers, anyone?) and further enrich the world of Old Time/Bluegrass music. latest addition to the band is cork man residing in dublin for some years now on double bass tom mealy, tom has played with several rockabilly /roots bands over the years as both drummer and bass player.
