On hearing a Jacqueline du Pre recording Paul took up the 'cello at age eight. Several years and orchestras later he had developed a taste for those low notes and bought an electric bass to join a local band. Seminal moments came after hearing Stanley Clarke and then Jaco Pastorius for the first time.
His first proper job found him near a local record library with a good jazz section and he devoured the horn players Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster, Charlie Parker and Stan Getz. Studying Double Bass had to follow, with inspiration from Mingus, Paul Chambers, Charlie Haden and Brian Bromberg.
Regular bands now include the jazz-funk outfit Over The Edge, Lionel Shell's Cool Jazz Trio with Dave Barrett, The Violet Jive - jazz and originals with Steve Spall, The Sarah Ward quartet with Iain Rae, The Jemima Price Band and gigs with top local names Robert Reid, Bob Bernard, John Harriman, Sue Rivers, Brennie Richards and others.
