RAMEKEGA is Melissa (vocals, guitar, percussion), Kelli (vocals, guitar, keyboard), and Gabrielle (vocals, drum, cajon, percussion). Sisters, performing singers/songwriters, and recording artists.
It has been said that, a song is an expression of the spirit and the soul. It's all of the memories, feelings, tears, laughter, sorrow, joy ... the very air we breathe. "And we merely take down what life dictates to us, and sing; and we try to be faithful to say
what it has to say." (Kelli)
RAMEKEGA's songs are reminiscent of an era when simplicity was a virtue; and, perhaps because of it, we imagine them to be timeless. As it is, the girls grew up believing that singing was a normal part of daily life. "Our parents instilled in us the idea that every human being has a reason to sing; because each one of us is a once-in-a-lifetime event that will never come back again. It's sad when you think about it, but it's also good because, in a way, it becomes the reason to sing." (Melissa)
The girls' biggest fan was their mother. She was the first to record the girls singing; as soon as they could mumble the words to a song. This eventually lead to participation in children's ministry choir at their church: "It's a great place to sing ... you can make a lot
of mistakes, and they have to forgive you." (Kelli)
Their father, encouraged them to develop their songwriting abilities ... "he said that a great song was to be preferred over a great singer; but we also knew that if we were going to sing, we needed to develop that too ... at least, for the sake of our listeners." (Gabrielle)
"Songwriting is like surfing ... if you catch a great wave, you just take it for the ride and enjoy. You really can't tell a wave what to do ... you just have to be prepared to take it and go with the flow. Anyway, that's just my opinion; but you definitely have got some great surfers out there who can read the waves better. I guess, and in the same way, some are great songwriters because they've practiced more, and have taken the time
to learn the craft of songwriting to the point where they can just go with it. Me, I'm still trying to stand on the surfboard ... still trying to get the hang of songwriting." (Kelli)
"The name? It's pronounced 'rah-me-kay-gah'" (Kelli)
"If you look us up in 30 years and we're still singing then, yes, we definitely made the
right choice. I think the wrong choice would be to not sing." (Melissa)
"... at first we thought they were just being nice and encouraging us because we were
kids. But, then they kept saying it more and more. We thought, wow, you really want
to hear our songs? So we did, and we're really glad to." (Gabrielle)
