Dave Dudgeon has been playing the Edinburgh music scene for longer than he would care to be reminded of. Starting out in 1977 with Route 66 in such salubrious haunts as the West End Club in Princes Street, The Yellow Carvell and the White Cockade. Jesus, I'm showing (and feeling) my age now. In the 80's He took a break from performing and taught guitar to unsuspecting night school attendees at Tynecastle, Firhill and Currie. Hence the profusion of bad guitar players all over Edinburgh! In the 90's he fronted Black Cat Bones who could be seen in all the main venues of the time, L'Attache, Platform 1, The Advocate, Preservation Hall and the good old Cas Rock Cafe. God I miss that place. We called it the Star Wars Bar! He is currently the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for The Usual Suspects, who distilled down from 10 piece soul band Detroit. (Three gigs, as keeping 10 people together and getting enough money per gig to make it worthwhile proved a challenge too far. We did manage a gig at the Corn Exchange though)! The Usual Suspects have been variously described as being "As tight as a sumo's nappy, gnat's chuff, an Aberdonian's wallet or two coats of paint". Prime Suspect is his acoustic project and for the moment the other members of the troupe are Craig Stewart from Sugarhouse on guitar and Colin Ferguson, who was the bass player with Black Cat Bones in the past and is now with Dear John, when not on Bass and Mandolin duties with us! Others who have graced the second chair include ex Suspects guitarist Mat Wilkinson and of course Emily Townsend who is now producing something of her own (for 9 months) Dave is also the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist with Sugarhouse, another well respected Edinburgh band where Craig's power noodlings on a Gibson vie for space with Dave's big stoopid guitaring and musical shouting. Dave can occassionally be found lurking in the background with, or indeed at the front of, well known function bands Callanish, The Capitals and Northern Star. Here's a video of me with Sugarhouse performing the classic Delilah. ( with apologies to Alex Harvey)!
